Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is still receiving intensive medical treatment in a Sardinian hospital, days after he lost consciousness in a swimming pool and had to be airlifted for emergency care.
The 20-year-old was pulled from the water at a private villa on Sunday afternoon and immediately flown to the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he has remained ever since. According to information relayed to the BBC, Trepy had been swimming with friends when he apparently drifted into a deeper section of the pool where he was unable to touch the bottom, leading to the incident that left him unconscious.
Cagliari confirmed on Tuesday that Trepy continues to be kept under what the hospital described as "pharmacological sedation" and remains on a ventilator. In a statement issued through the club, the hospital reported some encouraging signs, noting that the player is currently "fever free" and that his "respiratory function" has shown improvement since he was first admitted in a severe state.
Despite these small steps forward, medical staff have been careful not to offer false reassurance. The hospital stated that, provided Trepy's condition continues to stabilize, doctors intend to begin a "gradual reduction in sedation" in the coming days. However, it was also made clear that "the prognosis remains guarded," underlining the seriousness of the situation as the young striker fights to recover.
The incident occurred during a period when Cagliari's squad had been given time off following their Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo the previous Friday. Trepy featured in that match, playing 54 minutes as Cagliari secured a narrow 1-0 win, before the squad dispersed for their scheduled break.
Trepy has been one of the emerging talents to come through Cagliari's youth setup after joining the club's academy in 2022. Before making the move to Sardinia, he began his development in France with US Creteil-Lusitanos, a club based in the Paris region. Since progressing to the first team, Trepy made eight appearances in Serie A last season, scoring one goal as he began to establish himself at senior level.
The news of his hospitalization has cast a shadow over what had otherwise been a promising start to the season for the young forward and his club. Cagliari have not provided a timeline for any further updates, but supporters and teammates alike will be anxiously awaiting news of his condition in the days ahead.
As the club and medical staff continue to monitor his progress, the focus for now remains squarely on Trepy's health and recovery rather than football matters. Given the ongoing uncertainty highlighted by hospital officials, further statements are expected to follow as his treatment progresses.
