West Ham United have completed a club-record deal for the Championship, bringing in Belgian midfielder Arne Engels from Celtic in a move reported to be worth around £22-25 million. The transfer marks a significant statement of intent as the Hammers look to bounce straight back to the Premier League following their relegation.
Engels, just 22 years old, arrives in east London with a strong pedigree despite his youth. He began his career at Club Brugge before moving to Bundesliga side Augsburg, then joined Celtic in August 2024, where he won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles. He has also earned four caps for the Belgian national team, underlining the profile of player West Ham have managed to attract even after dropping out of the top flight.
The midfielder is the fourth signing of the summer for the club, following the arrivals of Venezuelan midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman and Israeli winger Manor Solomon. Negotiations for Engels had reportedly been ongoing since July, but talks accelerated this week, with the player travelling to London on Friday to complete his medical before the deal was finalised.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Engels made clear that promotion back to the Premier League is the immediate priority. "It's a really nice project to come into and try to go back to the Premier League," he said. "That's the big goal. I think that's everybody's goal and it's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins."
The Belgian added that he is eager to get started in front of the West Ham faithful. "Hopefully, we'll see that it's going to be a good year then and I'm looking forward to the next ones. I'm just looking forward to meeting all the fans at London Stadium. I'm looking forward to this challenging season, but hopefully we can make it a really good one, so let's go for it!"
West Ham's director of player recruitment, Nils Koppen, described the signing as a long-term target finally realised. "He is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target," Koppen said. "For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge, and we are excited to see him develop."
Koppen also pointed to Engels' character as a key factor behind the move, suggesting the midfielder fits the profile the club is building around as it plots a swift return to the top flight.
Engels will not be eligible to feature in West Ham's opening Championship fixture away at Burnley, a match that represents the club's first game outside the Premier League since their promotion back in 2012. However, he is expected to be registered in time for the Hammers' second league outing, a home clash against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium.
With the record fee now committed and a squad reshaped by four significant summer additions, West Ham will be hoping Engels can quickly settle into English football and help spearhead an immediate promotion push after their relegation from the Premier League.
