Djed Spence has completed a permanent transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Inter Milan in a deal worth £30 million, signing a five-year contract that will keep him at the San Siro until the summer of 2031.
The England international's departure brings an end to a three-year spell in north London, during which he made 85 appearances and scored twice after joining from Middlesbrough in 2022. His time at Spurs included a loan spell at Genoa in 2024, giving him his first taste of Italian football before his permanent return to Serie A.
Spence's exit follows a standout World Cup campaign in which he played a key role as England reached the semi-finals. Despite that form, opportunities for regular first-team football at Tottenham had become increasingly scarce. He often found himself behind Pedro Porro in the pecking order at right-back, with Porro having recently penned a new long-term contract to commit his future to the club. The situation looked set to become even more difficult on the opposite side following the summer signing of Andy Robertson, further narrowing Spence's pathway into the starting eleven.
In search of consistent playing time, the 25-year-old has now opted for a fresh start in Italy, where he will link up with England team-mate John Stones, who joined Inter as a free agent last month. Spence's move continues a busy period of turnover in Tottenham's defensive ranks, coming just days after Cristian Romero completed his own switch to Atletico Madrid.
Taking to social media to bid farewell to Spurs supporters, Spence reflected fondly on his time at the club, particularly its Europa League triumph in 2025 - a competition in which he featured briefly as a substitute during the final in Bilbao.
"A special chapter comes to an end," Spence wrote. "It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao."
He went on to thank those who supported him throughout his time in north London. "Thanks to all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family & most importantly, thank you to the fans," he added. "Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart."
Speaking to Inter's in-house media following the completion of his transfer, Spence expressed his excitement at joining one of Italian football's most storied clubs. "This is a huge Club and a big step for me and my family. I'm over the moon to be here and I'm ready to get started," he said.
The defender also touched on his earlier loan experience with Genoa, which paved the way for his permanent return to Serie A. "It was a special experience, and now I'm happy to be coming back as an Inter player," he explained.
With Stones already established at the club and Spence now arriving to bolster Inter's defensive options, the Nerazzurri appear to be building a squad with strong Premier League and international pedigree. For Spence, the move represents both a fresh challenge and an opportunity to secure the regular first-team football that had eluded him during his final season at Tottenham.
His long-term deal underlines Inter's confidence in the versatile full-back, whose performances for England at the World Cup significantly boosted his profile and evidently caught the attention of one of Europe's leading clubs.
