Inter Milan have secured the services of England international Djed Spence, confirming his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract. The Serie A champions are understood to have paid a fee in the region of 30 million euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old full-back.
Spence becomes the second England player to join Inter's ranks this summer, following John Stones' free transfer to the San Siro after the defender's contract at Manchester City came to an end.
Speculation around Spence's future intensified on Saturday when he shared a farewell message with Tottenham supporters across his social media platforms, effectively signalling that his time at the club was drawing to a close. "A special chapter comes to an end, It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao," Spence wrote. He continued, "Thanks to all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly thank you to the fans. Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart."
The reference to Bilbao points to Tottenham's Europa League triumph, a competition the north London club won during the 2024-25 season with Spence contributing to the squad's success. In total, the defender made 85 appearances for Spurs after arriving from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial fee of £12.5m.
Spence's exit comes after a season in which he made 44 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham during the 2025-26 campaign. However, his path to regular first-team football appeared increasingly uncertain following Pedro Porro's decision to sign a new contract in June, cementing his status as the club's first-choice right-back. The situation was further complicated by the signing of Andy Robertson from Liverpool, who has taken up the left-back role.
Despite the growing competition for places, Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi had expressed a desire in July to keep Spence at the club, hoping to persuade the England international that his future still lay in north London. Those efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful, with Spence instead opting for a return to Italian football.
This will not be Spence's first taste of Serie A football, having previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024. His move to Inter now offers him the chance to compete for major honours on a permanent basis with one of Italian football's most decorated clubs.
On the international stage, Spence has established himself as a regular under England manager Thomas Tuchel, featuring in all eight matches as the Three Lions secured a third-place finish at the World Cup. His performances on that stage will likely have played a role in attracting interest from a club of Inter's stature.
With Stones and now Spence both arriving from English football this summer, Inter appear to be strengthening their defensive options with proven Premier League and international experience, as the club looks to build on their status as reigning Serie A champions heading into the new campaign.
