Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract, extending his stay at the club as head coach Roberto De Zerbi looks to build his side around the Dutch centre-back.
Van de Ven originally joined Spurs from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year deal running until 2029, and this fresh agreement underlines the club's belief in the 25-year-old as a cornerstone of their future plans. According to reports, the new deal is a five-year extension.
Since his arrival from the Bundesliga, Van de Ven has made 96 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and has become a mainstay of the backline. He played a key role in Tottenham's Europa League triumph in 2025, when they defeated Manchester United in the final to end a long wait for silverware. He also stepped up as captain for the final six matches of last season, deputising for the injured Cristian Romero, as Tottenham survived a relegation scare on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign, having finished 17th in consecutive seasons.
There had reportedly been question marks over Van de Ven's long-term future in north London, with the defender said to have been weighing up his options before De Zerbi's appointment in March. That managerial change is understood to have been a significant factor in persuading him to stay.
Speaking about his decision to sign, Van de Ven said: "It's a special moment to sign a new deal and a proud moment for me and my family. I've always loved Spurs, from the first day I stepped in here. I love the club, I love the fans and I've developed really well here. It's clear the direction the club wants to go in and I want to be a part of it. I'm excited about what's to come."
De Zerbi was equally enthusiastic about tying down one of his most important players, praising the defender's qualities both on and off the pitch. "Micky is one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us," the Italian said. "He has the qualities, mentality and ambition that we want at Tottenham Hotspur, and I am very happy that he has decided to continue his journey with the club. We are building something strong here, and players like Micky are an important part of that future. His decision to sign a new contract shows his belief in what we are creating together."
Tottenham's sporting director Johan Lange also welcomed the news, highlighting Van de Ven's development since joining the club. "I am delighted that Micky has committed his future to the club," Lange said. "His growth and development over the past three years – as both a player and a person – has been huge, and he is now without doubt one of the outstanding defenders in European football. Micky represents the type of player we want to build our future around and I look forward to seeing him continue to play an important role for many years to come."
Van de Ven, who has 24 caps for the Netherlands and represented his country at this summer's World Cup, becomes the fourth senior Tottenham player to agree a new contract this summer, following Ben Davies, Pedro Porro and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. The club have been active in the transfer market as well, spending £237m this summer, including a club-record £100m deal to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
Elsewhere, Spurs midfielder James Maddison has moved to dismiss speculation linking him with a recurrence of a previous injury. Maddison, who missed most of last season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, has not featured in Tottenham's pre-season fixtures. De Zerbi said in July it was "not the right moment to take risks" with the England international, who was left out of the club's pre-season tour.
However, Maddison took to social media to reassure supporters, posting on Instagram: "Feeling good after another good session with the team. Working hard to be healthy and have a great year. Definitely haven't had any recurrence of any injury I've had before."
