A goal celebration turned painfully comic for Coritiba defender Jacy Maranhão during a Brazilian Série A match against Chapecoense, after he tumbled into a hole in the ground while celebrating a strike that was later chalked off.
Maranhão thought he had doubled his side's lead in the 41st minute, wheeling away in celebration with the ball stuffed under his shirt in a nod to his upcoming fatherhood. Eager to reach the home supporters, the 29-year-old attempted to leap over the advertising boards but misjudged the jump and dropped straight down a tunnel opening that leads to the away team's dressing room.
The goal itself did not stand. A video assistant referee review determined the effort should not count, denying Coritiba what they had believed was their second goal of the game. Despite the setback, the home side still came away with a 2-1 win over Chapecoense.
The fall left Maranhão with a knock to his ankle, and he was unable to continue after the interval. He was withdrawn as a substitute just two minutes into the second half and spent the remainder of the match on the bench with ice strapped to the injured joint. Fortunately for the defender, the injury was not serious.
Speaking about the incident afterward, Maranhão played down the damage.
