Newcastle United handed manager Jaissle his first victory in charge with a fluent display in a pre-season friendly, with substitutes Yoane Wissa and Bazoumana Toure making telling contributions after coming on at half-time.
The match also served as a showcase for the club's summer recruitment and academy talent, with two new signings and a host of youngsters given the chance to impress.
Malick Thiaw wore the captain's armband on his 25th birthday, a decision that appeared to offer a glimpse of the leadership group Jaissle may look to build around. He performed solidly at the back alongside Sven Botman, who survived a nervy moment when a defensive mix-up almost resulted in an own goal, before settling into the contest.
Miodrag Pivas, deployed out of position at left-back despite being naturally right-footed, handled the unfamiliar role well. Aladji Bamba made his first outing since his move from Monaco in a deal reportedly worth up to £34m, showing composure on the ball even though a few passes strayed off target.
Jacob Ramsey was one of the standout performers in the first half, full of energy and driving the team forward. He also produced a superb clipped pass that led to a goal for Anthony Elanga, though it was ruled out for offside. Elanga himself looked lively before his evening ended prematurely when he was caught by a poor challenge from Jose Gaya. He was carried off on a stretcher in visible discomfort, though the club later said they were hopeful the injury — a bruised shin — was not serious.
Up front, Nick Woltemade struggled to make his mark in the number 10 role, often dispossessed too easily, while William Osula went close with a shot from a tight angle that struck the side netting and also had a penalty appeal turned down. Harvey Barnes put in a committed shift as he continues to compete with Toure for a starting spot on the wing.
The second half brought a wave of changes and a much-improved attacking rhythm. Jacob Murphy came on before the break and looked to make an instant impact with a series of whipped crosses, though goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski dealt with them comfortably.
It was the introduction of Wissa and Toure at half-time, however, that changed the complexion of the game. Toure, a fresh face after his £43m move from Hoffenheim, was involved in both goals — pressuring Guido Fernandes into an error for the first before setting up Wissa for the second. His pace stood out throughout. Wissa, meanwhile, looked sharp as soon as he entered and finished both chances calmly, continuing the promising form he showed for DR Congo at the World Cup following a tough debut season on Tyneside.
Elsewhere, several academy products caught the eye. Eighteen-year-old Sean Steur looked composed beyond his years in midfield, while Mason Miley, following in the footsteps of his brother Lewis, showed no signs of nerves and has reportedly already impressed Jaissle in training. Dylan Charlton also acquitted himself well after coming through the club's youth ranks, and Henry Johnson enjoyed a memorable night, making his senior Newcastle debut at 18. Joelinton and Joe Willock added energy and control after being introduced later in the match.
Overall, it was a productive evening for Jaissle as he begins shaping his squad, with both new arrivals and academy graduates offering encouraging signs ahead of the new season.
