Arsenal have finalised the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a deal worth £75 million, confirming one of the most significant moves of the summer window as Mikel Arteta strengthens his squad ahead of the club's title defence. The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder has put pen to paper on a four-year contract, which includes the option of a further year, bringing to an end a spell at St James' Park that began in January 2022 and yielded 195 appearances and 31 goals.
Speaking to Arsenal's official media channels shortly after the transfer was confirmed, Guimaraes expressed his excitement at the switch. "I feel good, I feel amazing. I'm glad for the opportunity," he said. "Since the first time I spoke to (Andrea) Berta and Mikel (Arteta) I was excited. I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life."
The World Cup-winning midfielder, who has featured at two World Cups for Brazil, believes he has reached the stage in his career where a fresh test is required. "I think after playing two World Cups, I'm at the point of my life, I think I need a challenge like this," he added. "I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I'm in the right place to do it. I'm so excited to start. We have tough games to play this season so the squad is going to be very, very important and I'm hopeful we can achieve our dreams."
Guimaraes' departure leaves Newcastle needing to reinforce their midfield, and the Magpies are reportedly exploring a move for Marseille's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, valued at around £15m. The 31-year-old Denmark international, who previously played in the Premier League for Tottenham and Southampton, is among the options being considered by Newcastle as they look to fill the void left by their departing captain.
Elsewhere in Arsenal's business, the north London club have shifted their attention away from Vinicius Jr following his contract extension at Real Madrid, and have renewed their interest in Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, while also monitoring PSG winger Bradley Barcola. Liverpool are also keen on Barcola and have added his PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye to their list of targets, in a potential double deal. PSG may be open to letting both players leave, particularly after completing the signing of Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco. Liverpool have also reportedly agreed a loan deal, including an option to buy, for former Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo.
At Manchester City, a deal has been struck to sign goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for an initial £1.7m, as Pep Guardiola's side move to replace James Trafford, who left for Leeds this week in a £40m transfer. Rulli, 34, will sign a two-year contract with the option of a third and returns to the club a decade after first joining, having never made a first-team appearance for City following loan and permanent moves involving Real Sociedad.
Manchester United have also been active, completing the sale of goalkeeper Radek Vitek to Championship side Middlesbrough for a fee that could reach £14m, with a buy-back clause, matching rights and a 35 per cent sell-on percentage included in the agreement. The Red Devils have also been exploring left-back options, though Newcastle have made clear that Lewis Hall is not for sale as they attempt to prevent further departures from St James' Park.
Meanwhile, West Ham have withdrawn from talks with Tottenham over a move for winger Manor Solomon due to financial disagreements, potentially opening the door for Hull City to pursue the Israeli international, while Napoli's pursuit of Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus is understood to be contingent on Romelu Lukaku's proposed exit to Fenerbahce.
