Manchester United's pre-season tour of Scandinavia continued on Saturday with a high-profile friendly against Paris Saint-Germain at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, pitting Michael Carrick's improving side against the back-to-back European and reigning French champions.
United arrived in good form, having secured back-to-back victories in their previous outings, most recently a 2-1 comeback win over Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. That match saw Bryan Mbeumo net twice in the second half, first converting a penalty won by young forward Shea Lacey before turning home a deflected cross from Jack Fletcher, after Arnau Ortiz had put Atletico ahead early on.
PSG, by contrast, arrived in Sweden looking to bounce back from a shock 3-0 defeat to Spanish second-tier side Mallorca, in which Zito Luvumbo, Jan Virgili and Antonio Raillo all found the net. Luis Enrique's side remain without several key figures who featured for France and other nations at last month's World Cup, including Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, Fabian Ruiz, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, Lucas Hernandez and Warren Zaire-Emery.
There was better news for the French champions, however, with captain Marquinhos joined by Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Joao Neves in returning to the squad after their World Cup exploits, though all four began the match among the substitutes. Luis Enrique made just two changes to the side beaten by Mallorca, bringing in Willian Pacho for teenager Dimitri Lucea and handing 18-year-old Adam Ayari a starting role in an attacking line featuring Ibrahim Mbaye and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with Senny Mayulu given the captaincy from midfield.
Carrick made only one alteration to his own starting XI from the win over Atletico, with Noussair Mazraoui coming into the side on the right of defence in place of Leny Yoro. Tom Heaton, now 40, continued in goal for the third time this pre-season amid a squad shortage of goalkeepers, following the departures of Altay Bayindir on loan to Celta Vigo and Radek Vitek, who completed a permanent switch to Middlesbrough worth up to £14m. First-choice stopper Senne Lammens missed out through illness, alongside forward Matheus Cunha.
Several of United's higher-profile returnees, including Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and new midfield signing Youri Tielemans, were named among the substitutes, with Tielemans still awaiting his debut for the club following a post-World Cup break. Harry Maguire captained the side, with Andrey Santos and Mason Mount forming the midfield partnership behind Mbeumo, who once again led the line, supported by Amad Diallo, Lacey and Patrick Dorgu.
There was no place in the matchday squad for 15-year-old prospect JJ Gabriel, who had made his senior bow with a late cameo against Atletico Madrid the previous weekend. Carrick appears intent on managing the teenager's progress carefully, with Gabriel instead turning out for United's Under-21s in a 5-1 friendly win over Ipswich at Carrington alongside fellow academy talent Jim Thwaites, who also debuted against Atletico.
The friendly offered another opportunity for Carrick to assess his squad's depth ahead of a busy run of pre-season fixtures, with United set to face Leeds United in Dublin on 12 August before meeting AC Milan in Wroclaw three days later, ahead of the Premier League opener away at Hull City on 22 August. PSG, meanwhile, will shift focus to the UEFA Super Cup, where they meet Europa League winners Aston Villa in Salzburg, before contesting the Trophee des Champions against Lens.
