Liverpool are set to bolster their defensive ranks by bringing in Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan, with the move coming as manager Andoni Iraola grapples with a shortage of options at the back ahead of the new campaign.
The 27-year-old Uruguay international is expected to undergo his medical on Sunday before the switch is finalised. Reports indicate the agreement includes a purchase option that Liverpool could exercise once the loan spell concludes.
Araújo has been a regular fixture for Barcelona over the years, amassing more than 200 appearances for the Catalan giants and playing a role in their La Liga triumph last season. However, his game time diminished considerably in the most recent campaign, with just 11 league starts to his name, opening the door for a temporary switch to Merseyside.
Liverpool's need for defensive reinforcements has been heightened by a combination of factors. The club recently lost Ibrahima Konaté, who departed on a free transfer to join Real Madrid, thinning out their options at centre-back. Compounding matters, both Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni have been sidelined through injury, leaving Iraola with limited senior cover in that position.
Adding to the club's defensive concerns is the situation surrounding Jérémy Jacquet, the France Under-21 international who joined from Rennes in February for a fee exceeding £50m. Jacquet has yet to make his competitive debut for the club after suffering a serious shoulder injury last season, and he was notably absent from Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States.
Iraola addressed Jacquet's recovery last week, revealing that the youngster continues to experience discomfort that has prompted caution from the coaching staff. "He comes from a lot of months without playing. And obviously I would like to try with him with Virgil [van Dijk] when he recovers, because with the injury of Joe we've been without senior centre-backs. But we have to be careful with Jeremy," the Liverpool manager explained.
The pursuit of Araújo comes after Liverpool explored other avenues to strengthen their backline. The club had registered interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa but were deterred by his £60m valuation. Arsenal have also tested the waters for Konsa, only to see an initial bid turned down by Villa.
Beyond defensive reinforcements, Liverpool have been active on other fronts as well, holding discussions with Paris Saint-Germain regarding a potential deal for winger Bradley Barcola. The French champions, however, are said to be holding out for a fee in the region of £145m for the attacker. PSG, meanwhile, are reportedly turning their attention to Ferran Torres, the Spain international who starred in the World Cup final and has just one year remaining on his contract with Barcelona.
The arrival of Araújo would provide Iraola with an experienced option to shore up his defence during a period of upheaval, offering both short-term stability and long-term potential given the option-to-buy clause reportedly attached to the loan agreement. Liverpool's defensive rebuild continues to take shape as the club works to address the gaps left by departures and injuries ahead of the new season.
