Newcastle Confirm Bruno Guimaraes Set for Arsenal Move After Fee Agreed

Newcastle United appear to have all but sealed the departure of captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, with the two clubs finally reaching an agreement on a transfer fee for the Brazilian midfielder following months of speculation surrounding his future.

Although neither club has formally announced the deal, Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson strongly indicated that the move is now finished business, describing the negotiations between the two Premier League sides as a lengthy and complex process before terms were settled.

"You're dealing with very sophisticated actors on each side," Hopkinson said. "That's what negotiation looks like."

According to Hopkinson, Arsenal had initially hoped to secure Guimaraes for a lower fee than Newcastle were willing to accept, but the two parties eventually found common ground on a number that satisfied both sides. He suggested the final figure represents a record fee for a player of Guimaraes' position and age bracket.

"It's a fee that satisfies us," Hopkinson explained. "If you want to put a merchandising spin on it, it's the highest fee for a player in that position at that age, and all those things come into play."

Hopkinson also praised the 28-year-old as he prepares to swap Tyneside for north London, acknowledging that while the transfer represents a significant loss for Newcastle, it also brings Arsenal a player of considerable quality and character.

"Is it a good deal for Newcastle United? I believe it is, but Arsenal are getting a very special player and person," he said. "It's worked from a financial perspective for both sides."

The emotional nature of Guimaraes' exit has also come to light, with Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson revealing that the Brazil international was visibly moved when informing the club of his desire to leave for the reigning Premier League champions. Guimaraes reportedly said an emotional goodbye to teammates and staff before departing the club's pre-season training camp in Spain.

Wilson detailed how the midfielder's clear desire to move influenced the club's stance during negotiations, even though it did not automatically guarantee his exit.

"What we had to weigh up was, very respectfully from Bruno with his behaviour towards us, very emotionally as well, he effectively told us he wanted to leave and move on," Wilson said. "That doesn't mean he can go, but it certainly plays a part in what our thinking is when we hit a certain range of number."

Wilson was keen to stress, however, that selling their captain was never part of Newcastle's original summer strategy, insisting the club had to adapt to circumstances as they evolved rather than plan for his departure from the outset.

"There's no part in saying it was part of our strategy and was in our thinking this summer - it wasn't," he added. "But we have got to be flexible and react to things that happen."

Guimaraes has been a central figure for Newcastle since arriving from Lyon, quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite and eventually being handed the captain's armband. His switch to Arsenal, once finalised, will mark one of the most significant transfers of the summer window and represents a major statement of intent from the champions as they continue to strengthen their squad.

Both clubs are expected to make an official announcement on the transfer in the coming days, bringing an end to a saga that has dominated transfer headlines throughout the window.
