Crystal Palace have added to their defensive options by signing Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu on a free transfer, following a successful pre-season trial at the club. The length of the contract handed to the 27-year-old has not been disclosed by Palace.
Tomiyasu arrives at Selhurst Park without a club after leaving Arsenal, where he spent four years and made 84 appearances across all competitions following his move from Bologna in 2021. He also had spells with Sint-Truiden earlier in his career. The versatile defender, capable of operating at both full-back and centre-back, most recently featured for Ajax during the second half of last season and was included in Japan's squad for this summer's World Cup.
His arrival represents the second piece of business for new Palace boss Pierre Sage, who succeeded Olivier Glasner this summer. Sage previously brought in Oscar Mingueza, another free agent, after the defender's contract at Celta Vigo came to an end.
Strengthening the backline has been a priority for Palace this window after Maxence Lacroix, who had established himself as the club's first-choice centre-back, completed a move to Chelsea. Tomiyasu's ability to slot into multiple defensive positions gives Sage added flexibility as he settles into his new role.
Palace chairman Steve Parish welcomed the signing, highlighting the player's pedigree.
