Benfica Rout Hearts 6-1 to Leave Europa League Hopes in Tatters

Wouter Vrancken's turbulent start as Hearts manager took another hit as his side were thrashed 6-1 by Benfica in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie, leaving the Scottish club facing an all-but-impossible task to overturn the deficit at Tynecastle.

The Portuguese giants wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead through Rafa Silva in the third minute. Benfica continued to pile on the pressure and were three goals to the good by half-time thanks to a Tomas Araujo header and a Vangelis Pavlidis penalty.

The rout continued after the interval when Gianluca Prestianni pounced on a defensive error from Tom Renaud to make it 4-0 just before the hour mark. Hearts did find a way back into the contest when Renaud atoned for his mistake by pulling a goal back, sparking a spell of improved play from the visitors. However, Benfica reasserted control late on, with Jhon Duran and Andreas Schjelderup - the latter converting a second penalty of the night - completing the scoring to make it 6-1.

The heavy defeat leaves Hearts in serious danger of dropping out of Europa League contention entirely and into the Conference League play-off round instead. Benfica, by contrast, are on track to meet the losers of the Champions League qualifying tie between Aarhus and Sabah Baku in the next round of Europa League qualifying.

Speaking after the match, Vrancken acknowledged the scale of the challenge his side faced against a side of Benfica's pedigree.
