Chelsea are grappling with an oversized squad as the transfer window edges closer to its September deadline, leaving new head coach Xabi Alonso with the task of significantly paring down his options. With 41 senior professionals currently on the books and just 25 days left before the window shuts, the Spaniard is understood to want the group reduced to a more workable 25 players.
The issue has been highlighted by Chelsea's lack of European competition this season after finishing 10th in the Premier League under a campaign that saw Enzo Maresca depart and Liam Rosenior later dismissed. Without continental fixtures to help absorb a bloated squad, Alonso is eager to trim numbers quickly, even though Premier League rules on 25-man squads are softened by under-21 and homegrown player exemptions that cover much of Chelsea's roster.
The scale of the situation was evident during Chelsea's pre-season tour of Asia, where the club named 21 substitutes for Wednesday's 1-0 friendly defeat to Juventus in Hong Kong, only five of whom were academy graduates. That was despite key absences: Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill missed out through injury, while striker Emmanuel Emegha continues his recovery from a hamstring problem back at Chelsea's training base.
Five players are not even training with the first team - Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Caleb Wiley - and are all available for permanent transfers or loan deals. Meanwhile, seven others remain on holiday following extended involvement at the World Cup, including Enzo Fernandez, Reece James, Morgan Rogers, Jordan Henderson, Maxence Lacroix, Valentin Barco and Malo Gusto.
Movement is already underway. Defender Trevoh Chalobah is closing in on a £31m move, including add-ons, to Como, while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is set for a loan switch to sister club Strasbourg. Full-back Pep Chavarria is also expected to complete a £16.3m transfer from Rayo Vallecano to bolster Chelsea's left-back options alongside Jorrel Hato.
Alonso has been particularly vocal about the centre-back department, where Chelsea currently have nine options. He has stated the group needs to be cut to "four or five", with Disasi and Badiashile both up for sale and Mamadou Sarr likely to depart on loan. That would leave Lacroix competing with Colwill, Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo for a starting role.
Elsewhere, Chelsea have placed a £75m valuation on right-back Gusto amid reported interest from Manchester City, while midfielder Enzo Fernandez, tagged at £120m, is said to be weighing his future even as the club remains open to keeping him. In attack, the unexpected return of Mykhailo Mudryk following a doping-related suspension adds further complexity, with the club still assessing his fitness after 20 months on the sidelines.
Chelsea's approach reflects a long-standing strategy of stockpiling talent that dates back to the Roman Abramovich era, when the club once had 42 players out on loan before FIFA introduced restrictions. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's takeover in 2022, the Blues have spent an eye-watering £1.8bn on recruitment - more than any other European club - while also generating close to £1bn in sales, including a Premier League record £300m in a single window.
This summer is expected to follow a similar pattern, with Chalobah's move to Como pushing total sales beyond £150m and Alejandro Garnacho's loan to Aston Villa, including an obligation to buy, valued at roughly £40m. Given Chelsea's relatively modest revenues compared to other 'big six' clubs, player trading remains central to balancing the books as Alonso reshapes his squad for the season ahead.
