Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on young winger Ceadach O'Neill, describing the 18-year-old as a player with significant potential following his involvement in the club's pre-season campaign.
O'Neill, who joined Arsenal's academy system after starting his career at Linfield, has been given a taste of first-team action during the Gunners' preparations for the new season. The teenager featured in friendly matches against Girona and Real Betis, and also found the net in a behind-closed-doors encounter with MK Dons.
Speaking to BBC Sport NI's Thomas Kane following Arsenal's 3-1 defeat to Betis in Dublin on Wednesday, Arteta made clear his admiration for the young Northern Ireland international.
"I've been really impressed with him," Arteta said. "For his age, he's really mature, really focused, and he has tremendous quality. He's a player that we have big hopes with and we just need to develop him in the right way."
O'Neill's rise through the ranks at Arsenal has been rapid. The winger netted 18 goals in 30 appearances for the club's academy sides, a return that helped earn him international recognition before he had even made his senior debut for the Premier League champions.
His form was enough to convince Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill to hand him a call-up, and the teenager made his senior international bow as a substitute in June's friendly against Guinea. He followed that with another appearance four days later in a match against France, gaining valuable experience at the international level despite his tender age.
Reflecting on those outings, O'Neill suggested they had provided a useful platform as he now looks to make an impact during pre-season with Arsenal. The winger, who remains eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland due to his heritage, is hopeful of further involvement with Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland side when their Nations League campaign gets underway with an away trip to Georgia next month.
For now, though, the youngster's priority remains establishing himself at club level with the Gunners.
"At the minute I'm just going to take it day by day, keep coming in and giving it my best. That's all I can do," O'Neill said.
He added that he has stayed in contact with the Northern Ireland manager but is determined not to lose focus on his development at Arsenal. "I've been talking to Michael recently but I have to keep pushing at club level and we'll see what happens. I'm just trying to concentrate at club level and I think that's all I can do. I'm really enjoying what I'm doing and where I'm at."
Arsenal's pre-season schedule has offered O'Neill a chance to train and compete alongside established first-team players, experience that Arteta believes will be crucial in shaping the youngster's progression. While the Gunners boss stopped short of promising an immediate pathway into the senior squad, his comments suggest the club see O'Neill as part of their long-term plans.
With interest growing around his performances for both club and country, O'Neill's next steps will be closely watched as Arsenal continue their preparations ahead of the new Premier League season.
