Diego Forlan, one of Uruguay's most celebrated forwards, has agreed to take charge of the national team on an interim basis, stepping in following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa.

The 47-year-old will lead La Celeste through their friendly fixtures this autumn while the Uruguayan football federation searches for a long-term successor, with a permanent appointment expected either at the end of this year or in early 2027. In addition to his role with the senior side, Forlan has also been placed in charge of Uruguay's Under-20 team, giving him responsibility across two levels of the national setup simultaneously.

His appointment comes after Bielsa's exit in the wake of a disappointing World Cup campaign, in which Uruguay were eliminated at the group stage. The Argentine, who had taken over as head coach in May 2023, managed a win rate of 15 victories from 39 matches during his tenure. Reflecting on his time in charge following the early World Cup exit, Bielsa admitted his spell
