Swansea City have strengthened their forward line by securing the signature of Scotland international Ross Stewart, who arrives as a free agent following his exit from Southampton. The 30-year-old has agreed a three-year contract at the Swansea.com Stadium, becoming the club's sixth permanent addition of the summer transfer window.
Stewart's departure from Southampton was confirmed in June after the two parties could not reach an agreement on a new deal. His arrival in south Wales could have significant implications for Zan Vipotnik, the Slovenian forward who topped the Championship scoring charts last season and is reportedly attracting interest elsewhere this window.
Head coach Vitor Matos described Stewart as a seasoned campaigner capable of making an immediate impact at Championship level, pointing to his track record with both Southampton and previous club Sunderland. Matos revealed that discussions with the striker made clear his ambition to take on a leadership role within the squad.
"In our conversations he has made clear his hunger and desire to be an important senior figure and leader in our dressing room," Matos said. "His goalscoring record shows he is someone who relishes responsibility and we look forward to getting down to work with him and settling him into the group."
Stewart enjoyed his most productive campaign at St Mary's last season, netting 11 goals in 33 appearances after two previous seasons were hampered by injury problems that limited him to just 17 outings combined. He was part of Scotland's World Cup squad this summer, making a substitute appearance against Morocco, and has four caps for his country overall.
A hamstring injury cost him a significant portion of the 2025-26 campaign, yet he still managed nine goals and two assists across 27 league appearances. Stewart also contributed two goals during Southampton's run to the FA Cup semi-finals, including the opening goal in their quarter-final win over Arsenal.
The striker's route to the professional game began with youth spells at Ardeer Thistle and Kilwinning Rangers before he joined Albion Rovers in 2016. He went on to represent St Mirren, Alloa Athletic and Ross County, where he claimed both the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup during the 2018-19 season, before moving to Sunderland in 2021.
His time at the Stadium of Light proved highly productive, with Stewart scoring 40 goals in 81 appearances and helping the Black Cats win the EFL Trophy and secure promotion to the Championship. That form led to his 2023 move to Southampton, where he ultimately scored 12 goals in 50 appearances across his spell at St Mary's.
Swansea's sporting director Ben Stevens welcomed the signing, highlighting the experience Stewart brings both on and off the field. "We are delighted that Ross has joined Swansea City, he brings a wealth of experience on and off the pitch," Stevens said. "His performances last season in the Championship were a standout, and it earned him a deserved place in Scotland's World Cup squad. We are very excited to see Ross in a Swansea shirt."
Stewart now joins Vipotnik and Adam Idah as options in Matos' forward line, with the Welsh club having already sold Liam Cullen to Leicester City this summer and potentially set to loan out Bobby Wales. Swansea's other summer arrivals include Moussa Yeo, Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku, Stephen Welsh and Leo Walta, alongside loan signing Tiago Parente from Benfica. The club is also reportedly pursuing Valencia's Andre Almeida and Randers midfielder Ousseynou Fall Seck as further targets before the window closes.
