Manchester City's Rodri finds himself at the centre of a fascinating transfer saga as both Real Madrid and Barcelona weigh up their interest in the Spain international, whose contract situation has become increasingly complicated.
The World Cup-winning captain, who was named player of the tournament after leading Spain to their second world title, has entered the final year of his City deal. Despite weeks of negotiations between Real Madrid and Rodri's representatives, no agreement has been reached, opening the door for Barcelona to make their move.
City are reportedly willing to sanction a sale for around £60m, though the club remain hopeful the 30-year-old midfielder will commit to a new contract rather than leave. City sources have previously indicated they are "counting on" Rodri for the coming season, and any suitor would need to table a substantial fee to prise him away.
Barcelona's interest has sharpened following an injury to Frenkie de Jong, who is expected to be sidelined for several months with a knee problem. A move to Catalonia would reunite Rodri with several Spanish national teammates, including Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Pedri, and allow him to join a side that has won the league in each of the past two seasons.
However, a return to Real Madrid, where he previously spent time with Atletico Madrid's rivals across the city, remains firmly on the table. Such a move would see him reunite with former City teammate Bernardo Silva, who joined Real on a free transfer this summer, and play under returning manager Jose Mourinho. Rodri has previously suggested that turning down a move to one of the game's superclubs is not straightforward, having said "you can't turn down the best clubs in the world" regarding Real Madrid.
Complicating matters further for Real Madrid is their pursuit of a contract extension for Vinicius Jr, whose current deal has less than a year remaining. Arsenal had been positioning themselves to potentially swoop for the Brazilian forward, but talks between his representatives and senior Real Madrid figures at the club's Valdebebas base appear to have moved firmly in the Spanish giants' favour. Reports suggest Vinicius Jr is closing in on a new five-year deal, understood to run until 2031 and worth an estimated €25million net annually, with Mourinho said to have personally pushed for the winger's continued presence at the Bernabeu.
Should Real Madrid need to raise funds or make room for a move on Rodri, midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga have been mentioned as possible departures, with Manchester United among the clubs linked with the French duo. Real have also agreed a club-record fee of £115m for RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, further stretching their summer spending.
Meanwhile, Barcelona's other transfer priority, luring Julian Alvarez away from Atletico Madrid, appears to be stalling. Atletico have consistently maintained that the Argentine striker, who arrived from Manchester City, is not for sale regardless of the offer. Barcelona's sporting director Deco met with Alvarez's representatives in Madrid, but no breakthrough has been reported, with Arsenal also said to be monitoring the situation.
Adding another layer to Barcelona's summer business, forward Ferran Torres, scorer of the winning goal in Spain's World Cup final victory over Argentina, has entered the final year of his own contract. Torres said he is waiting for the club to open discussions over an extension. "All I know is that I have to be in training for Barcelona on 12 August. Let's see what happens," he said, adding when asked what the club needed to do to keep him: "Show me they want me, come to negotiate."
For now, Rodri remains sidelined after undergoing minor back surgery and has yet to link up with his City teammates, who are on a pre-season tour in the Far East ahead of their Community Shield clash with Arsenal. His decision, whenever it comes, promises to shape one of the summer's most significant transfer sagas.
