Chelsea's Pre-Season Woes Continue as Juventus Edge Blues in Hong Kong

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Chelsea

Chelsea's difficult pre-season took another turn for the worse as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Juventus in Hong Kong on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive loss under manager Xabi Alonso.

The Blues struggled to find fluency against their Italian opponents for large parts of the match, unable to break down a well-organized Juventus side. The decisive moment came in the second half when Edon Zhegrova produced a stunning curling strike to hand Juventus victory and leave Chelsea searching for answers.

With pre-season traditionally used to build match sharpness and squad cohesion, Alonso now faces mounting pressure to turn things around before the competitive season begins. Chelsea will look to bounce back when they face AC Milan in Indonesia this weekend, a fixture that suddenly carries added significance after back-to-back defeats.

Amid the disappointment, there was a bright spot in the performance of 19-year-old Geovany Quenda, whose £40million transfer to Chelsea has attracted comparatively little attention given the club's busy summer of transfer activity. Quenda had missed the opening two matches of the tour in Australia due to a minor injury and had not travelled with the squad initially, but he returned to full fitness in time to start against Juventus.

Given the freedom to operate centrally and combine with right-back Marco Palestra, Quenda looked lively throughout, showing composure on the ball even in challenging conditions. One of his standout moments came when he curled in an inswinging delivery that Danny Welbeck narrowly failed to convert, heading the chance wide. His eagerness to receive possession and drive at defenders suggested he could be ready to force his way into Alonso's first-choice lineup sooner rather than later.

Less encouraging for Alonso was the continued uncertainty in Chelsea's defense. The Spanish coach had hoped to use the pre-season tour to foster a strong partnership between Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill at the heart of the backline, but fitness issues have repeatedly interrupted their time together on the pitch. Fofana in particular looked shaky when attempting to play out from the back during the Juventus match. With the Premier League season now just three weeks away, Chelsea appear no closer to solving their defensive organization problems, an issue that has plagued the club for several seasons.

The goalkeeping situation also remains unresolved, with Alonso having made clear that both Robert Sanchez and new signing Mike Penders will be given opportunities to claim the No.1 spot, with no assurances made to either. Sanchez, who arrived from Brighton in 2023, has divided opinion among supporters over his suitability as a top-level goalkeeper. Against Juventus, he again demonstrated a mix of strong shot-stopping ability and shaky command of his box, at one point fumbling a cross into the danger area.

Penders, by contrast, arrives with strong credentials following a productive campaign at Strasbourg, a sister club within the Blues' ownership network, though he still lacks significant experience at the elite level. With no clear favorite emerging for the position, competition between the two goalkeepers is likely to intensify in the coming weeks as Alonso searches for stability between the posts heading into the new campaign.
