Carabao Cup First Round to Break with Tradition, Moving to Weekend Fixtures

The opening round of the 2026-27 EFL Cup will take place away from its usual midweek slot, with the vast majority of matches scheduled across a weekend for the first time in a full round this century.

The competition, officially known as the Carabao Cup because of sponsorship, will get underway on Thursday, 6 August 2026. Of the 34 ties making up the first round, 33 will actually be staged between Friday and Monday, marking a significant shift from the tournament's usual midweek scheduling. The exception to that midweek tradition has always been the final itself, which is held at Wembley on a Sunday.

The change to the calendar means the competition will no longer follow its customary pattern of starting in midweek immediately after the opening weekend of Championship, League One and League Two fixtures. Instead, the entire first round will now be completed the weekend before those three divisions begin their league campaigns.

This adjustment came after discussions between organizers and clubs from the English Football League regarding a revised schedule. The clubs agreed that shifting the first round forward by a week would help ease the burden on players, who have previously found themselves fitting in three matches within a short span of time due to the cup fixture being squeezed between two league games. By moving the cup round to before the season starts, clubs will have more breathing room for player recovery.

As for the specific date, the competition had initially been planned to begin on Friday, 7 August. That start date was moved forward by a day, however, after it was confirmed that Bristol City's first-round tie against Walsall would be played on Thursday, 6 August, meaning the round as a whole now technically opens a day earlier than first intended.

Weekend fixtures in the League Cup are not entirely without precedent — there were some weekend matches in both 2020 and 2021, and 14 fixtures were played on a weekend back in 2012. Even so, none of those instances amounted to a full round being played outside of midweek, aside from the final, making next season's format a notable departure from the norm.

It is also worth noting that this opening round remains restricted to clubs from the Championship, League One and League Two. Premier League sides continue to be exempt from this early stage, with their involvement in the competition beginning only from the second round onwards, as has long been the tournament's structure.

The restructuring reflects an effort by the EFL to better manage fixture congestion for lower-league clubs heading into a new season, giving those teams a fuller programme of preparation and recovery time before their league campaigns begin in earnest. Whether the weekend format becomes a permanent fixture in the Carabao Cup calendar beyond next season remains to be seen, but for 2026-27 at least, supporters of Championship, League One and League Two clubs will see their side's cup campaign begin on a weekend rather than in the middle of the working week.
