Man City Debutant Monga Reveals Why He Snubbed Arsenal for Etihad Move

Jeremy Monga's £10million switch from Leicester City to Manchester City barely made headlines when it was completed this summer, but the 17-year-old's rise through the ranks suggests his career trajectory could be far more eye-catching in years to come.

Monga became the third-youngest player ever to feature in the Premier League and is now adapting to life at one of football's most decorated clubs, working under former Leicester manager Enzo Maresca. The teenager got his first taste of action for his new side during a pre-season friendly against a K-League XI at Seoul World Cup Stadium, a match City won 3-1 in demanding heat, with goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Divin Mubama all arriving within the opening 23 minutes.

Monga was introduced from the bench and spent roughly 30 minutes on the pitch, showing flashes of the energy and quality that persuaded City to move for him. He came agonizingly close to marking his first outing with a goal, only for a close-range finish to be ruled out for handball. He also forced a save from the opposing goalkeeper with a curling attempt.

The teenager's arrival at the Etihad came after what looked to be a done deal with Arsenal. Mikel Arteta's side, the reigning champions, appeared to be closing in on Monga before City swooped to beat their rivals to his signature.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Monga admitted that Arsenal's pursuit had been serious. "It [Arsenal interest] was very strong because it was very close to me going there, very close," he said. However, he explained that City's project and pathway ultimately won him over. "The main decision was probably the pathway and the club itself. They've been so successful that it was a no-brainer when City call. It's every child's dream to win trophies and be at the top with the best."

Despite the competition for places at a squad as star-studded as City's, Monga is confident that his chance will come. "Once I get the opportunity I just need to show myself, and once I do that, everything will take care of itself," he said. "I feel like, to me personally, I see myself at City more. I see myself in blue."

Born in Coventry, Monga grew up supporting Chelsea and has cited former Blues and Real Madrid star Eden Hazard as his footballing idol. The Belgian, who was already establishing himself at Lille when Monga was born in July 2009, went on to enjoy a trophy-laden career that included two Premier League titles, two La Liga crowns, Champions League glory in 2022, and individual honors such as the PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, both in the 2014-15 season.

Asked what elements of Hazard's game he tries to replicate, Monga pointed to the Belgian's fearless approach to attacking play. "Definitely his directness, him taking the game by the scruff of his neck trying to win the game by himself and definitely the way he manipulates the ball, trying to implement that into my game," he said. "Even the way he protects the ball from his opponents and moves around the pitch, everything is what I want to do."

When asked to single out specific memories of his idol, Monga referenced two standout moments. "His [solo] goal against Tottenham - or the goal against Liverpool. When you see the goal, you remember it," he said.

Should Monga go on to replicate even a fraction of Hazard's achievements in the game, his decision to join Manchester City over Arsenal could prove to be a defining moment in a promising young career.
