Fulham have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, with talks understood to be progressing over a deal worth approximately £25million, according to reports.
The 22-year-old, who came through Manchester City's academy before joining Southampton, has drawn significant transfer interest following a strong campaign on the south coast last season. Charles played a key role as Southampton reached the Championship play-offs, though the club were later excluded from the competition due to the fallout from the so-called Spygate controversy.
Leeds United had previously shown interest in the midfielder, submitting two offers that were turned down by Southampton. However, attention has now shifted towards Fulham, who are reported to be leading the chase for his signature as manager Alvaro Arbeloa looks to strengthen his midfield options.
The west London club have identified a need to bolster that area of the squad, particularly with Sasa Lukic entering the final year of his contract at Craven Cottage. The Serbian midfielder is said to have caught the eye of newly promoted Ipswich Town, adding urgency to Fulham's search for reinforcements.
Charles would represent the third significant addition to Fulham's squad this summer following a busy period of business under Arbeloa. The club recently completed the signing of 21-year-old midfielder Cesar Palacios from Real Madrid for a fee in the region of £8.5million. Fulham have also been credited with interest in another Real Madrid academy talent, teenage forward Thiago Pitarch.
In a further raid on his former employers, Arbeloa oversaw the signing of striker Gonzalo Garcia from Real Madrid for a fee believed to be around £34.3million. The 22-year-old forward is expected to provide competition and eventual succession for veteran striker Raul Jimenez in Fulham's attacking line.
Having secured two of his primary summer targets, Arbeloa has now turned his focus towards completing a deal for Charles as he seeks to inject fresh legs into a Fulham squad that has shown signs of ageing in recent seasons. The Northern Ireland international brings considerable experience for his age, having already made more than 100 appearances in the Championship.
Southampton, meanwhile, are preparing to begin their new season campaign this weekend with a Carabao Cup first-round trip to Colchester United. The club will be keen to resolve Charles' future before the transfer window progresses further, though no agreement has yet been confirmed between the two clubs.
Fulham continue their own preparations for the upcoming campaign, with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Crystal Palace scheduled for Friday as part of their pre-season schedule. The club will be hopeful of wrapping up the Charles deal in the coming weeks as they look to finalise their squad ahead of the new campaign.
With Arbeloa having already demonstrated a willingness to do business with his former club Real Madrid this summer, all eyes will now be on whether Fulham can fend off any late interest and secure the signing of Charles to complete what has so far been an active transfer window for the Cottagers.
