Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor have confirmed they are in negotiations to sign Mohamed Salah, with the club's chairman expressing hope that a deal could be completed before the end of the week.

The Egyptian forward became available on a free transfer after departing Liverpool at the conclusion of last season, closing out a nine-year spell at Anfield. In an official statement released on Turkey's public disclosure platform, Trabzonspor said: "Negotiations have been launched to transfer professional footballer Mohamed Salah, who is in a free status, to our club."

Trabzonspor chairman Ertugrul Dogan provided further details in an interview with broadcaster A Spor, explaining that although the deal has not yet been finalized, Salah is scheduled to travel to Istanbul on Wednesday to undergo a medical examination. He would then continue on to the city of Trabzon to put pen to paper with the Black Sea club. Dogan stopped short of confirming an exact signing date but suggested a contract could be signed as early as Thursday.

According to the club's statement, Salah is expected to arrive in Trabzon on the evening of the same day as his medical, with further information about a potential welcome event to be announced through official channels.

The move would mark a significant coup for Trabzonspor, who are widely regarded as Turkey's fourth-largest club behind the Istanbul giants Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, and Besiktas. Known as the "Black Sea Storm," the club has won seven Turkish league titles, including a memorable triumph in 2022 that ended a 38-year drought. Last season, Trabzonspor finished third in the Super Lig and are set to compete in the Europa League playoff round.

Salah's departure from Liverpool brought to a close one of the most decorated individual careers in Premier League history. Across 442 appearances for the Reds, he scored 257 goals and registered 120 assists, helping the club capture two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and the Community Shield. He also won the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions and was named the PFA Player of the Year three times, in 2018, 2022, and 2025.

His standout campaign came in 2024-25, when he scored 29 league goals and added 18 assists, equaling the Premier League record for goal involvements in a single season and setting a new benchmark for a 38-game campaign. That performance earned him the Premier League Player of the Season award along with the Golden Boot and Playmaker Award, making him the first player to sweep all three honors in one season.

However, his final season at Liverpool proved less prolific, with just seven goals and seven assists in 27 league appearances. He was also frequently left out of the starting lineup for Champions League fixtures, a decision that reportedly led to tension between Salah and then-manager Arne Slot.

Before this potential move to Trabzonspor, Salah had reportedly been close to a deal with fellow Istanbul club Besiktas. However, football director Onder Ozen indicated that those talks broke down over disagreements related to financial terms and image-rights compensation, according to local media reports.

Salah, now 34, began his European career at Swiss club Basel in 2012 before moving to Chelsea. He later had short spells at Fiorentina and Roma between 2015 and 2017 prior to his transformative move to Liverpool. Most recently, he represented Egypt at this year's World Cup, helping his national team reach the round of 16 before falling 3-2 to eventual finalists Argentina.
