An England supporter who inked a bold prediction onto his leg has been forced to revisit the tattoo parlour after his premature celebration backfired.
Sean Carrington, a 36-year-old roofer, paid £550 for a leg tattoo featuring an image of the World Cup trophy alongside the words "England World Cup Winner 2026." He had the design completed after watching Thomas Tuchel's England side edge past DR Congo 2-1 in the round of 32, a result that left him fully convinced the Three Lions were destined to lift the trophy.
That confidence proved misplaced. Argentina eliminated England in the semi-finals with a 2-1 win, ending any hope of the tattoo matching reality. Tuchel's squad went on to finish the tournament in third place after defeating France 6-4 in a high-scoring third-place playoff staged in Miami.
Rather than cover up the artwork, Carrington returned to Holy Trinity Tattoo Studio in Standish for a second sitting, this time adding the words "Just joking" beneath the original design. Speaking to the BBC after the touch-up, he made clear where his priorities lay.
"I'm more bothered that England hasn't won the World Cup than I am to have a tattoo on my leg," Carrington said. "It's not bothering me. It's just a tattoo."
Despite the embarrassing turn of events, Carrington insisted he had no regrets about getting the original tattoo in the first place. "I wouldn't have done anything differently," he said. He also seemed pleased with how the correction turned out, describing the added line as "sound" and noting, "I didn't really feel it."
Jamie Taylor, manager of the tattoo studio, revealed that the amendment would typically have cost around £100, but the parlour chose to carry out the fix free of charge given the circumstances.
The studio shared footage of the correction on its Facebook page, poking fun at the situation while praising Carrington's attitude. "This is exactly why tattoo artists tell you to wait," the post read, alongside the caption "Well… this aged well." The studio recounted how, just a month earlier, their customer had been so certain of England's triumph that he had the words "England World Cup Winners 2026" permanently etched onto his skin. "Fast forward to today… and he's been back for a little update," the post continued, referencing the newly added "Just joking" line. The studio also commended Carrington for taking the mishap in stride, writing: "At least he's got a good sense of humour! Fair play for owning it."
As for whether he might seek out further football-inspired body art down the line, Carrington did not rule out the idea, though he suggested any future tattoo would be spontaneous rather than planned. "I don't plan any tattoo, it's just if it pops in my head," he explained.
The episode has since circulated widely on social media, with many finding humor in Carrington's willingness to embrace the awkward outcome rather than hide it. While England's World Cup dream ended in disappointment against Argentina, the third-place finish following the win over France offered some consolation for fans like Carrington, even if his tattoo now serves as a permanent reminder of premature optimism rather than a national triumph.
