Newly promoted Ipswich Town have strengthened their midfield options ahead of the new campaign by completing the signing of Portuguese defensive midfielder Florentino Luis from Burnley for a fee that has not been disclosed. The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Portman Road, committing his long-term future to the club as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

Florentino arrives having made 31 league appearances last season for Burnley, who suffered relegation from the top flight. His move to Suffolk comes after fellow promoted side Hull City had also registered their interest in securing his signature, though it is Ipswich who have won the race for the midfielder.

The Portuguese international's switch to English football began as a loan spell from Benfica, before an obligation-to-buy clause was triggered in June, making the transfer permanent for a reported fee of £20.8m. He made an immediate impact after his debut against Liverpool last September, quickly becoming a regular fixture under then-manager Scott Parker as Burnley fought unsuccessfully to preserve their Premier League status.

Before his move to England, Florentino enjoyed a decorated career at Benfica, where he lined up alongside current Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez. During his time in Lisbon, he was part of the squad that clinched Portugal's Primeira Liga title in both 2019 and 2023, as well as winning the Portuguese League Cup earlier this year. His international pedigree is also well established, having represented Portugal at every youth level from Under-15 through to Under-21.

Speaking after putting the finishing touches on his move, Florentino expressed his excitement at joining the Tractor Boys. "It feels brilliant to be a part of this club," he said. "I like how the club sees the future and there are a lot of good players here. I can bring experience and balance to the team, between defence and attack, and I like to bring the connection."

Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil was equally pleased to add the experienced midfielder to his ranks, highlighting the value of his top-flight and European pedigree. "He brings experience of playing in the Premier League as well as other major competitions in Europe, including the Champions League, and makes us stronger in central midfield," O'Neil said.

The arrival of Florentino represents a significant boost for Ipswich as they look to establish themselves in the Premier League following their promotion. His background of competing at the highest level in both domestic and continental competitions, combined with his experience of English football gained during his time at Turf Moor, should provide O'Neil with a reliable option in the middle of the park.

With his versatility to operate between defensive and attacking phases of play, Florentino is expected to offer Ipswich greater balance and control in midfield battles against Premier League opposition. The five-year length of his contract underlines the club's long-term vision and confidence in the player as a foundational piece of their squad building.

As Ipswich continue their preparations for the new season, the signing of Florentino adds further depth and quality to a squad aiming to consolidate its return to English football's top tier.
