Chelsea have received a significant boost to their pre-season preparations with winger Mykhailo Mudryk cleared to resume his career, while seven other players have joined up with the squad in Hong Kong ahead of a friendly against Juventus.
Mudryk's return comes after a lengthy and turbulent period away from the game. The Ukrainian was provisionally suspended by the Football Association in December 2024 following an adverse finding in a routine urine test conducted while he was on international duty with Ukraine. The test revealed a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance.
In June 2025, Mudryk was formally charged with breaching the FA's anti-doping regulations, and a subsequent hearing in January resulted in a four-year ban that threatened to keep him sidelined until December 2028. The winger challenged that ruling through an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
That appeal process has now concluded, with the FA and Mudryk reaching a resolution on Friday. Under the agreement, Mudryk accepted the anti-doping violation and a period of ineligibility equivalent to the time he had already served, making him immediately eligible to play again.
It was also noted that under revised World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines, the concentration of meldonium found in Mudryk's original sample would no longer be reportable, meaning no violation would have been recorded had the same test taken place under current rules.
Speaking after the announcement, Mudryk maintained his innocence, saying he had never knowingly or intentionally taken a banned substance. He described the ordeal as the most difficult period of his career as he looks ahead to getting back on the pitch.
With the suspension now behind him, Mudryk is set to link up with his Chelsea teammates as the club's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia continues in Hong Kong, where Enzo Maresca's side face Juventus at Kai Tak Sports Park on Wednesday.
Mudryk is not the only player bolstering Chelsea's ranks for the fixture. Portuguese winger Pedro Neto has rejoined the group following his post-World Cup break, as has Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders. Summer signing Geovany Quenda has also arrived to link up with his new teammates for the first time on this tour.
American goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina has travelled to Hong Kong to join the squad as well, adding further competition between the posts. Meanwhile, Chelsea's coaching staff has also seen a change, with new set-piece coach Austin MacPhee now present with the team having made the move from Aston Villa. MacPhee takes over the specialist role from Bernardo Cueva, who has shifted into a different position within the club's coaching setup.
The influx of returning players and new faces gives Chelsea a fuller squad to work with as they continue preparations for the upcoming season. The Juventus friendly represents an opportunity for the club to assess combinations and fitness levels across a group that has been significantly reshaped over the summer, both through incoming transfers and the resolution of Mudryk's disciplinary case.
For Mudryk personally, the match in Hong Kong could mark the first step back toward regular competitive action after months of uncertainty over his future. How quickly he can return to full sharpness remains to be seen, but his eligibility to play again removes a significant cloud that has hung over both the player and the club since his provisional suspension was first announced.
