Arsenal have seen an opening bid for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes rejected by the Magpies, though the north London club appear determined to press on with their pursuit of the Brazil international.
The two Premier League sides have opened direct talks over a potential deal, but a clear gap in valuation between the clubs has emerged as the main sticking point. Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle from Lyon for £40 million in January 2022, has gone on to make 195 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 31 goals and establishing himself as one of the club's most influential figures before being handed the captaincy.
Reports suggest Arsenal's proposal could be worth in the region of £80 million, and there had been suggestions the midfielder might even undergo a medical with the Gunners early in the week. Instead, Guimaraes made his way to Spain to join his Newcastle teammates at their pre-season training base in La Manga, having earlier flown out from Brazil following his extended break after representing his country at the World Cup.
According to reports, Guimaraes had already made his intentions known to Newcastle as far back as July, informing the club of his desire to move to Arsenal. Despite that, he is expected to link up with his current teammates as planned, with speculation suggesting he could reaffirm his wish to leave once he arrives in camp.
Newcastle are keen to avoid another significant departure this summer having already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham. The club's stance appears to be that they will not stand in Guimaraes' way entirely, but any transfer would need to meet their financial demands in full. There is no strong indication at this stage that the situation will escalate into a saga similar to Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool last summer, when the Swedish forward effectively forced through a British record £125 million transfer by withdrawing his services.
Adding to the turbulence at St James' Park, Newcastle are currently searching for a new head coach following Eddie Howe's departure. German coach Matthias Jaissle is understood to be closing in on the vacant role. The club have nonetheless remained busy in the transfer market, bringing in five new signings this summer, including goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, winger Bazoumana Toure, and midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba.
Having finished 12th in the Premier League last season, Newcastle will be unable to offer Guimaraes European football in the upcoming campaign, a factor that may work in Arsenal's favour as talks continue.
For their part, Arsenal are looking to strengthen further as they prepare to defend their title, having so far added only winger Christos Tzolis among outfield signings this summer. The Gunners have also been strongly linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr amid his contract uncertainty at the Spanish club, and have confirmed a permanent deal for defender Piero Hincapie by triggering a £34.5 million option following his loan spell from Bayer Leverkusen.
With Guimaraes now back in training with Newcastle and negotiations ongoing between the two clubs, the coming days are expected to prove pivotal in determining whether Arsenal can find an agreement that satisfies Newcastle's valuation of their captain.
