Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has suggested that captain Callum McGregor could go on to manage the club one day, after the 33-year-old midfielder put an end to speculation about his future by confirming he intends to stay at Parkhead.
McGregor had been the subject of transfer talk over a potential move to Saudi Arabia, but reports indicate the veteran midfielder held talks over the summer with Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson regarding his long-term future at the club. Those discussions appear to have settled the matter, with McGregor choosing to remain with the Scottish champions rather than pursue a move abroad.
O'Neill's endorsement of McGregor as a future coaching candidate reflects the growing esteem in which the long-serving captain is held at Celtic Park, having established himself as a key leader in the dressing room over many seasons.
Elsewhere in Celtic's transfer business, the club has turned down an approach from Spanish side Osasuna for Scotland international left-back Kieran Tierney, who is 29. Celtic appear determined to keep hold of the experienced defender rather than sanction a departure.
On the incoming front, Celtic's pursuit of Fares Ghedjemis has hit a snag after Frosinone rejected an opening offer of around £6m for the Rangers-linked Algeria winger. The 23-year-old is wanted by the Serie A club, though talks between the two sides are said to be continuing.
Celtic are also working to secure a deal for Paderborn midfielder Mika Baur, with the Scottish champions reportedly preparing to increase their offer to a structured package worth approximately £5m. However, conflicting reports suggest Baur may instead stay in Germany after an earlier £4m bid from Celtic was turned down, with Paderborn head coach Ralf Kettemann indicating he expects the 22-year-old to remain at the club.
A move for winger Haissem Hassan also appears to have stalled, with Real Oviedo rejecting an offer of roughly £6.2m from French side Lens for the 24-year-old, who has been linked with Celtic.
Across the city, Rangers have seen a target move elsewhere, with Hull City emerging as favourites to sign 20-year-old Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl. Reports suggest Rangers have withdrawn from the race, leaving Hull as front-runners ahead of Cardiff City for the Norwegian's signature.
Rangers have also opened discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding winger Amario Cozier-Duberry, though the Premier League club are reportedly not under pressure to sell the 21-year-old after already rejecting a £5m bid from Anderlecht.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur winger Mikey Moore, who spent last season on loan at Rangers, looks set for a move to Cologne, with the German club understood to be favourites to secure the 18-year-old on loan amid competition from several other clubs.
In other Scottish football news, St Mirren say they have received no contact from other clubs regarding midfielder Killian Phillips, 24, despite ongoing speculation. Northampton Town's Scottish midfielder Dean Campbell has attracted interest from Notts County and other League One sides.
St Johnstone's hopes of a lucrative sale for striker Adama Sidibeh have been dealt a blow after he suffered a hamstring injury while on loan at Stockport County, with the 20-year-old previously tipped for a £1.5m move amid Championship interest.
Finally, former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has opened up on his decision not to return to Ibrox, revealing he was reluctant to uproot his family from the Middle East and had reservations about the club's recruitment strategy. "I didn't want to return to Scotland and leave my family in the Middle East," Gerrard said, also citing doubts about transfer planning at the club.
