Chelsea have added another name to their busy summer rebuild, confirming the signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco from sister club Strasbourg on a seven-year deal. The transfer fee has not been disclosed.
Barco, 22, becomes one of the latest arrivals under new head coach Xabi Alonso, continuing a rapid overhaul of the squad since his appointment. A versatile operator capable of playing at left-back or in central midfield, Barco is expected to link up with his new teammates on Chelsea's pre-season tour of Australia and Hong Kong, with the club due to face Juventus in Hong Kong on 5 August.
The move reunites Barco with familiar surroundings, given Chelsea and Strasbourg share ownership under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. His switch marks the 13th transfer completed between the two clubs since the start of last season, and the second player this summer to make the move from Strasbourg to Stamford Bridge.
A product of Boca Juniors' youth academy, Barco first arrived in English football in 2024 when Brighton signed him for a reported £7.9m. However, his stay on the south coast was brief, limited to seven appearances - six of them in the Premier League - during the 2023-24 campaign. He subsequently joined Strasbourg on loan before making the move permanent, helping the Ligue 1 side qualify for the Conference League. In total, Barco made more than 50 appearances for Strasbourg.
Internationally, Barco has represented Argentina and was part of the squad that reached the final of the 2026 World Cup, where they finished as runners-up. He won his fifth cap for his country in a 3-1 group-stage victory over Jordan, though he featured only sparingly during the tournament as an unused substitute in several matches.
Barco was thrust into the spotlight following Argentina's 2-1 semi-final win over England in Atlanta, when he became involved in a heated exchange with England midfielder Jude Bellingham. Images circulated widely showing Bellingham appearing to clip Barco around the head after the Argentine had run onto the pitch to celebrate Enzo Fernandez's equalising goal. The incident quickly went viral and added an extra layer of intrigue to Barco's move to English football.
His arrival extends what has already been a hectic transfer window for Chelsea as they look to reshape the squad under Alonso. The club have been active across multiple positions, recently completing the signing of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. That deal followed the additions of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, both key pieces in Chelsea's ongoing squad rebuild.
Other new faces to join Stamford Bridge this summer include Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, underlining the scale of investment and turnover taking place at the club as Alonso looks to stamp his identity on the squad following his move from Real Madrid.
With Barco now added to the ranks, Chelsea's business this summer shows little sign of slowing down as the club continues to blend experience with promising young talent ahead of the new season. His versatility across midfield and defence is expected to provide Alonso with valuable tactical options as preparations continue during the club's pre-season tour.
