Lille Head to Arsenal Missing Three Key Players Ahead of Champions League Clash

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Ligue 1 Arsenal FC

Lille will be without three significant players when they travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in the Champions League, with injuries and suspension depleting their options for the European encounter.

The most serious blow is the loss of right-back Tiago Santos, who has been a near-permanent fixture for the French side this campaign, featuring in all six of their Ligue 1 outings as well as their continental opener, a defeat to Real Betis that marked Lille's return to Europe's premier club competition.

Santos was carried off on a stretcher just 17 minutes into Lille's victory over Le Havre at the weekend after being caught by a poorly-timed challenge from Amir Richardson. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed the extent of the damage: a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee alongside a torn meniscus, ruling him out for an extended period.

In a club statement, Lille described the injury as serious and confirmed Santos would require lengthy rehabilitation. "Tiago has thus suffered a serious injury that will require a lengthy rehabilitation. Today, LOSC's absolute priority is naturally to support its player, a member of the LOSC family, through this difficult time," the statement read. It added that the club's staff, management and medical team would stand by the defender, who previously battled back from a comparable injury in 2024, offering "all the necessary human, medical and psychological support."

The statement also voiced frustration at the lack of disciplinary action taken against Richardson for the challenge. Lille pointed out that despite the incident being captured from numerous camera angles and replayed in slow motion, with VAR available to review serious missed incidents including potential red cards, no sanction, not even a caution, was issued against the Le Havre player.

Santos is not the only absentee for Lille in north London. Ethan Mbappe, the younger brother of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, will also miss the fixture after picking up a suspension following his sending off against Betis. Additionally, Hamza Igamane, who arrived from Rangers, remains sidelined by a cruciate ligament problem suffered back in January, though reports suggest the forward could be close to returning to full training and matches.

Despite the injury list, there is a notable storyline surrounding Lille's trip to the Emirates: Olivier Giroud is poised for a reunion with Arsenal supporters eight years after departing the club for Chelsea. However, widespread reports indicate the experienced striker will begin the match among the substitutes rather than in the starting lineup.

Lille's squad for the trip includes goalkeepers Ozer, Gill and Sajous, while the defensive options available feature Srdanovic, Ngoy, Alexsandro, Perraud, Nianzou, Verdonk, Cossier and Goffi. In midfield, boss Bruno Genesio can call upon Bentaleb, Haraldsson, Kjaergaard, Mukau and Andre, while the forward line, beyond Giroud, includes Bakwa, Sahraoui, Ueda, Onal, Perrin and Diaoune.

With key personnel missing, Lille will need to adapt their approach against an Arsenal side looking to build momentum in this season's Champions League campaign. The absence of a regular starter like Santos, combined with the suspension of Mbappe, presents a considerable challenge for the visitors as they look to avoid a second defeat in the competition following their opening loss to Betis.
