Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed the growing conversation around Eberechi Eze's lack of playing time, insisting the England international remains a key part of his plans despite being overlooked for the club's last Premier League fixture.
Eze was left on the bench as Arsenal edged past Leeds United 2-1, with Arteta instead opting for Noni Madueke on the left side of the attack. Madueke, who stepped into the starting XI after Christos Tzolis picked up an injury on international duty with Greece, played the entirety of the match and did enough to catch his manager's eye.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal's upcoming Champions League meeting with Lille, Arteta was asked about the situation surrounding Eze, who has yet to start a single league match for the Gunners this season. The former Crystal Palace playmaker has mostly featured from the bench in domestic competition, though he has started in cup competitions, including appearances in the League Cup victory over Ipswich and the Champions League win against Napoli.
Arteta made clear that selection at Arsenal is determined by form and application rather than reputation or price tag, stressing that every player in his squad, including Eze, must prove themselves in training and on the pitch.
"Like everybody else I think they need to earn the right to play," Arteta said. "That's up to training sessions and when you are on that pitch to have the impact on the game that the team needs, in order to achieve that."
The Arsenal boss was quick to offer reassurance that Eze's opportunities are far from over, suggesting that the fixture list and squad rotation will inevitably open doors for him in the coming weeks.
"He is going to have many opportunities to do that," Arteta added. "His attitude is phenomenal and our players have to adapt as well to his qualities."
Those comments suggest that while Madueke has temporarily leapfrogged Eze in the pecking order, Arteta views the competition for places as healthy rather than a long-term demotion. The Spanish coach has often spoken about the depth of his squad being central to Arsenal's ambitions this season, and the situation involving Eze and Madueke appears to be a direct example of that competitive environment in action.
Madueke's full 90-minute shift against Leeds marked a statement performance, with the ex-Chelsea winger seizing his opportunity after Tzolis's injury forced a change in personnel. His display has added another layer of competition for places out wide, an area of the pitch where Arsenal now appear to have multiple in-form options.
For Eze, the challenge will be to respond in training and make the most of any chances that arise, whether in the league, domestic cups, or in European competition. His manager's comments indicate that patience, rather than frustration, is the message being sent to the player as Arsenal navigate a busy period of fixtures across multiple competitions.
With the Lille clash in the Champions League offering another chance for fringe players to impress, attention will turn to whether Eze is handed a recall to the starting lineup or continues to wait for his opportunity to reclaim a regular spot under Arteta.
