Lille will be without a key defender for their Champions League trip to face Arsenal after confirming that right-back Tiago Santos has sustained a serious knee injury.
The 24-year-old Portuguese international had been a mainstay of the Lille side this season, featuring in all six of the club's Ligue 1 fixtures as well as their opening European outing, a defeat to Real Betis that marked the team's return to continental competition after a lengthy absence.
Santos was forced off on a stretcher just 17 minutes into Lille's weekend victory over Le Havre, following a challenge from Amir Richardson that the club has since strongly criticized. Medical examinations confirmed the extent of the damage: a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, accompanied by a torn meniscus, an injury that will sideline him for an extended period.
In a statement, Lille expressed their support for the player, noting this is not the first time he has faced such a setback. "Tiago has thus suffered a serious injury that will require a lengthy rehabilitation. Today, LOSC's absolute priority is naturally to support its player, a member of the LOSC family, through this difficult time," the club said. "The entire Club, its management as well as the sports and medical staff are fully mobilised alongside Tiago — who had already faced a similar injury in 2024 — in order to provide him with all the necessary human, medical and psychological support."
Beyond the medical concerns, Lille also voiced frustration at the lack of disciplinary action taken against Richardson for the tackle. The club pointed out that despite multiple camera angles and slow-motion replays broadcast in real time, no card was shown to the Le Havre player, nor did VAR intervene despite having the authority to review serious incidents or missed red-card offenses. "Even though the intervention of the Le Havre player was visible in real time, many cameras captured the scene from different angles, slow-motion replays were immediately broadcast, and VAR can intervene in the event of a clear error or a serious incident missed, including a possible direct exclusion, no sanction was issued, not even a warning," the statement continued.
The loss of Santos compounds an already difficult squad situation for Lille as they prepare to travel to north London. Ethan Mbappe, the younger brother of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, will also be unavailable, serving a suspension following his sending-off in the defeat to Betis last month.
Despite the selection headaches, there will be a notable storyline at the Emirates Stadium regardless of the lineup troubles. Olivier Giroud, who departed Arsenal for Chelsea eight years ago, is expected to return to the stadium where he once starred for the Gunners, setting up what promises to be an emotional reunion for the veteran striker.
Lille will now have to regroup quickly as they look to overcome the double setback of losing their first-choice right-back for the long term and being without Mbappe for disciplinary reasons, all while facing an Arsenal side at home in a crucial early-season Champions League fixture. How manager Bruno Genesio reshapes his backline in Santos's absence will be closely watched as Lille attempt to build on their European return following the opening loss to Betis.
