Hammarby Overwhelm Rangers to Seal Europa Cup Progress

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Real Sociedad

Rangers' involvement in the Europa Cup has come to an end after Hammarby produced a commanding display to win 3-0 on the night at Broadwood Stadium, sealing a 5-0 aggregate triumph over the two legs.

The Swedish side, runners-up in last season's competition and currently second in the 2026 Swedish top flight, wasted little time asserting their dominance. Just 13 minutes had elapsed when defender Mathilde Janzen threaded a precise pass through to Anna Walter, who calmly steered the ball past an exposed Jenna Fife in the Rangers goal to extend the visitors' advantage from the first leg.

Rangers, who top the Scottish Women's Premier League, showed some early intent of their own, with forward Laura Berry testing goalkeeper Cajsa Andersson with a shot straight at her in the 21st minute. It was a rare moment of promise for the home side, who struggled to make inroads against a well-organized Hammarby defence.

The Swedish visitors could have widened the gap further before half-time, as Icelandic striker Ida Hermannsdottir and midfielder Elin Sorum both failed to convert presentable opportunities from close range. Despite the missed chances, Hammarby's control of the game remained evident throughout the first half.

Rangers enjoyed spells of possession after the interval but found it difficult to translate that into clear-cut chances. It wasn't until the 58th minute that they mustered another effort on goal, with Berry once again finding Andersson well positioned to make the save.

Any hopes of a Rangers comeback were extinguished two minutes later when Hermannsdottir showed her class, gliding onto another superbly weighted through ball before slotting home a clinical finish to make it 2-0 on the night and effectively end the contest as a contest.

Hammarby's dominance was further underlined in the closing stages when 16-year-old midfielder Fanny Peterson, who had also scored in the first leg, added her second goal of the tie. She reacted quickest after Svea Rehnberg's close-range attempt was only parried by Fife, tapping home the rebound to complete a convincing 3-0 victory on the night.

The result means Rangers' European campaign in the continent's second-tier women's competition has come to a disappointing close, having been comprehensively outclassed by a Hammarby side with genuine European pedigree from their run to last season's final.

It proved to be a difficult night for Scottish football on the continental stage, as Rangers' exit was compounded by the earlier elimination of Scottish champions Heart of Midlothian, who suffered defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad in another tie played out on the same evening.

For Hammarby, the victory represents another step forward as they look to build on last season's run to the final, with their attacking talents once again proving decisive against Scottish opposition. Rangers, meanwhile, will now turn their focus back to domestic matters as they continue to lead the Scottish Women's Premier League table.
