Despite controlling much of the opening 45 minutes, Spurs found themselves behind at the break after Johan Manzambi, making his full debut, converted from close range following a loose ball that fell to him from Boubacar Kamara's effort. The young forward grew into the contest after a shaky start under early Tottenham pressure, eventually delivering both a goal and an assist to cap an impressive first full outing.
Tottenham's misery was compounded just before halftime when Micky van de Ven picked up a facial injury and had to leave the pitch for treatment, meaning he was absent when Villa struck. Suzuki was a standout performer for Villa in the first half, denying both Savio and Gray with strong saves to keep his side on level terms before Manzambi's opener. At the other end, Antonin Kinsky could do little about the goals he conceded, having earlier made a smart stop to deny Buendia.
In midfield, Villa's Joao Gomes made a solid return in his first Premier League appearance since his opening-weekend dismissal, while John McGinn was influential throughout, capitalizing on an error from Andrew Robertson to help tee up Manzambi's decisive strike. Robertson endured a difficult afternoon defensively, struggling to make an impact from left-back.
For Tottenham, summer signings continued to underwhelm. Omar Marmoush, brought in partly for his goal threat, struggled to make any meaningful impact before being substituted, while Sandro Tonali also had a subdued outing in midfield. Rodrigo Bentancur was one of the few bright spots for the visitors, showing energy and composure until Villa began to dominate the middle of the park late on.
