Millwall and West Ham United will renew one of London football's fiercest rivalries on Saturday when they meet at The Den in a lunchtime Championship fixture, their first competitive encounter in over a decade.
The two clubs have not shared a pitch since the 2011/12 Championship campaign, meaning Saturday's clash will end a wait of some 14 years for supporters on both sides. That gap has only sharpened the intrigue surrounding the reunion, particularly given the contrasting circumstances the two clubs find themselves in this season.
West Ham arrive at The Den at the top of the Championship table and will be looking to extend their advantage as they push for an immediate return to the Premier League following relegation. Millwall, under the management of Alex Neil, currently sit in the middle of the standings after a mixed start to the campaign, and a victory over their London rivals would provide a welcome boost while disrupting the Hammers' charge toward the summit.
The last time the two sides squared off was during the 2011/12 season, when they played out a goalless draw at The Den in September 2011 - a match in which West Ham, through David Bentley and Henri Lansbury, passed up clear opportunities to win it. The return fixture at Upton Park in February 2012 proved more eventful. Kevin Nolan was shown an early red card for a two-footed challenge on Jack Smith, yet West Ham still came out on top thanks to goals from Carlton Cole and Winston Reid either side of a Liam Trotter equaliser for Millwall, moving the Hammers four points clear at the top of the division.
Before that Championship double-header, the clubs' last meeting had been a notorious League Cup second-round tie at Upton Park in August 2009, remembered as much for crowd trouble - including pitch invasions - as for the football itself. West Ham won that match 3-1 after extra time, with Junior Stanislas scoring twice and further goals from Zavon Hines and Neil Harris. That game came shortly after West Ham's relegation from the Premier League under Avram Grant, a drop that ended a six-year stay in the top flight. The Hammers subsequently missed out on automatic promotion behind Reading and Southampton but secured a swift return via the play-offs, beating Cardiff City in the semi-finals before overcoming Blackpool at Wembley under Sam Allardyce.
Historically, Millwall hold the bragging rights in this fixture, having last beaten West Ham back in November 2004. The two clubs have met just seven times so far this century, with each side winning twice and three matches ending level. Remarkably, West Ham have never won at the current version of The Den, their most recent away success against Millwall dating back to December 1988, when a Paul Ince goal settled a First Division encounter at the old Den. Their previous away win before that stretches all the way back to March 1939. Millwall, for their part, have never played at West Ham's London Stadium home and have not won at Upton Park since a Full Members Cup tie in November 1987.
Saturday's fixture will mark the 100th competitive meeting between the two sides. Across their long history, Millwall lead the overall head-to-head record with 38 wins to West Ham's 34, with 27 matches drawn. The teams are already scheduled to meet again in the reverse fixture at the London Stadium on February 21, 2027.
