Chelsea head into their Premier League trip to Brentford with lingering uncertainty over several key players, after manager Xabi Alonso confirmed he would wait until the eve of the match before finalizing his squad selection.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Alonso addressed the fitness of Joao Pedro, Reece James, and Moises Caicedo, all of whom missed Chelsea's most recent training session at the club's Cobham base, footage of which was released by the club following the manager's comments.
Despite their absence from that session, Alonso stopped short of ruling any of the trio out of Friday's fixture at the Gtech Community Stadium. "In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad we are having the last training session tomorrow so no-one is ruled out for us for Friday," he said. The Spanish coach explained his cautious approach, noting that a definitive decision would only be made once the squad had completed one final training session.
"So I prefer to be cautious and we will wait until tomorrow to take the final decision on every player," Alonso continued. "We will see tomorrow if Joao is ready to play, it's a possibility."
On James, who has battled fitness issues throughout his Chelsea career, Alonso indicated that Tuesday's session played a role in the club's ongoing assessment. "For Reece, it was just a decision for Tuesday and we see his development and tomorrow we will decide," he said, suggesting the defender's recovery is being monitored closely before any final call is made.
Caicedo, meanwhile, appears to be edging closer to full fitness, according to Alonso, though he too was left out of the highlighted training footage. "He's getting closer and tomorrow we will take the final decision on the team and on the squad that is coming to Brentford," the manager said.
Alonso reiterated multiple times that no conclusions had yet been drawn, emphasizing the importance of giving his players every opportunity to prove their fitness before the matchday squad is locked in. "Tomorrow is the final decision. Sorry to repeat myself, but before the players know we need to assess all the positions with the last training and tomorrow we will make the decision for the game in Brentford," he added.
The Chelsea squad for the match will be officially announced at 6:45pm BST, just over an hour before kick-off, which is scheduled for 8pm at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The stakes are notable for Chelsea, who could climb to third in the Premier League table with a win, though that position may prove short-lived given that both Hull and Brighton are in action against Newcastle and Arsenal respectively the following day, potentially reshuffling the standings almost immediately.
History offers a cautionary note for the Blues, however. Chelsea have not tasted victory away at Brentford since October 2021, when a solitary goal from Ben Chilwell settled the contest in their favor. Breaking that drought will be a priority for Alonso's side as they look to solidify their position among the league's top sides, injury concerns permitting.
With so much still undecided just a day before kick-off, all eyes will be on Chelsea's final training session to determine which of Joao Pedro, James, and Caicedo will be available for selection against Brentford.
