Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman has not been included among the ten nominees for this year's Kopa Trophy, the France Football award recognising the finest young footballer in the world aged 21 or under, despite growing excitement around the teenager's progress at the Emirates Stadium.
The shortlist for the 2026 prize features a mix of established prospects and rising stars from across Europe's top leagues. Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi and Aston Villa's Johan Manzambi both make the cut, alongside Ayyoub Bouaddi, who completed a move to Manchester City during the summer transfer window. Real Madrid's new winger Yan Diomande is also nominated, as are Kerim Alajbegovic, Lennart Karl and Ibrahim Maza.
France international Warren Zaire-Emery is included once again, while Barcelona duo Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi round out the ten-man list. Yamal, who has already claimed the Kopa Trophy in each of the previous two years, is in contention to complete an unprecedented hat-trick of victories, a feat that would further underline his status as one of the most gifted young players of his generation.
Dowman's omission comes even as Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta continues to heap praise on the youngster's development, having deployed him in various roles this season and been consistently impressed by his output. Speaking after one of Dowman's recent performances, Arteta did not hold back in his admiration for the teenager's ability to influence matches.
"He was unbelievable again; some of the actions and connections that he can give us on the pitch are just a joy to watch," Arteta said.
The Arsenal boss went on to highlight the strides Dowman has made in terms of his physical and tactical maturity, suggesting the player is becoming an increasingly reliable option for the club rather than simply a raw talent relying on pace and instinct.
"He was really efficient; he's getting more and more active in action; he can sustain for longer periods, and we know the talent that we have," Arteta added. "We're going to make sure that when we just throw him there, he's ready to handle that at every level, and it's not just that he can run past somebody."
Arteta was also keen to stress that Arsenal's coaching staff would continue to manage Dowman's development carefully, pointing out that the responsibility for earning further opportunities ultimately rests with the youngster himself.
"There's a lot more things that we need to look after him, but he will dictate that in terms of how he behaves every single day and how many reasons he gives to play because he's part of our squad, like anybody else, no different," the Arsenal manager said.
He concluded by noting the importance of consistency and readiness as Dowman continues to be integrated into the first-team picture at the Emirates.
"The only thing that we have to manage is that he needs to constantly be aware that he needs to be prepared for what he needs to do," Arteta said.
While Dowman will have to wait for recognition on the Kopa Trophy stage, his manager's comments suggest Arsenal remain confident in his long-term potential, even as this year's nominees prepare to compete for one of football's most closely watched young talent awards.
