Aston Villa eased into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Coventry City on Wednesday, as Tammy Abraham scored twice and Ross Barkley added another to give Unai Emery's side a rare stress-free evening.
The result piled further misery on Frank Lampard's Coventry, who have now lost five of their six matches across all competitions this season and remain without a Premier League win alongside Villa heading into the fixture. The Sky Blues have struggled defensively since returning to the top flight, a stark contrast to the meanest defence they boasted in the Championship last term.
This marked the first competitive meeting between the two clubs since May 2001, when Coventry's 34-year top-flight stay ended with a defeat at Villa Park. Despite Coventry investing roughly £130million over the summer, the gulf between the sides was evident for long stretches of the match.
Emery made seven changes to his lineup, handing full debuts to big-money arrivals Ibrahim Mbaye (signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £47m), Matteo Ruggeri (a £17m capture from Atlético Madrid) and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (£25m from Southampton). It was another squad player, 19-year-old George Hemmings, who created the opening goal, slipping a delightful outside-of-the-boot pass to Abraham after being found by Ruggeri down the left. Abraham calmly rolled the ball beyond goalkeeper Dan Bentley to open the scoring.
Lampard, who made nine changes following Sunday's 5-0 defeat to Brighton, saw his side hit back through Victor Torp. After Barkley was penalized for a foul near the edge of the box, Torp curled a superb free-kick over the Villa wall and beyond Marco Bizot. It was Coventry's first goal in open competition since Torp's strike in the previous round against Plymouth.
Buoyed by the equalizer, Coventry enjoyed a spell of pressure, with Bobby Thomas and Gustavo Hamer both threatening without finding the target. Villa captain John McGinn also spurned a good opportunity for the visitors before the game swung decisively in their favor. From a corner, Mbaye's inswinging delivery found an unmarked Barkley at the near post, and the midfielder headed home to restore Villa's lead.
Coventry's defensive frailties were exposed again shortly after, as Abraham added his second from close range following another corner. McGinn's delivery caused confusion in the box, and Abraham nipped in ahead of 18-year-old debutant Stephen Mfuni, on loan from Manchester City, to poke the ball home.
With the game seemingly settled, Emery took the opportunity to make changes, withdrawing McGinn and Mbaye for Emi Buendía and record signing Johan Manzambi, who arrived for a reported £52m. Zion Suzuki also came on for the injured Bizot at halftime, while Nicolas Jackson replaced Abraham after 69 minutes.
Villa, who face Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday, will now look to build on this rare comfortable win as they push for consistency in their domestic campaign. Coventry, meanwhile, travel to Nottingham Forest this weekend in search of their first league win of the season, with Lampard under increasing pressure after such a difficult start.
Elsewhere in the competition, League Two side Fleetwood pulled off a major upset by beating Championship club Sheffield United 1-0, courtesy of a Rhys Norrington-Davies own goal, setting up a home tie against Arsenal in the next round. Everton also progressed with a 1-0 win over Wolves, substitute Charly Alcaraz scoring the only goal shortly after coming on, earning a home draw against Newcastle in the fourth round.
