Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has moved to reassure supporters that Joe Gomez's half-time substitution against Tottenham was a pre-planned decision rather than a sign of fresh injury trouble, following the defender's return from a lengthy layoff.
Gomez made his first appearance of the 2026/27 campaign in Tuesday's Carabao Cup clash, having been sidelined by a muscle problem sustained during pre-season. The 29-year-old captained the side in the opening 45 minutes, playing at centre-back, before being taken off at the interval.
Asked about the substitution, Iraola explained that the decision had been made in advance rather than reflecting any concern over Gomez's fitness. "Joe has been doing the recovery process very well and with him it made sense to come off at half-time," the Liverpool boss said. "It wasn't set but the plan was not a lot more than 45 minutes."
Liverpool progressed comfortably to the last 16 of the competition with a 3-1 win, though the scoreline flattered Tottenham somewhat given how the match unfolded. Alexis Mac Allister broke the deadlock in the first half, and Cody Gakpo added a second shortly after the restart to put the Reds firmly in control.
Spurs responded through Conor Gallagher, and Omar Marmoush came close to leveling the contest, only to be thwarted by an outstanding save from Liverpool's stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Any hopes of a Tottenham comeback were extinguished in stoppage time when substitute Dominik Szoboszlai found the net with a stunning strike from 25 yards.
Beyond the result, the performance of teenage forward Lewis Koumas caught the eye, with the 20-year-old leading the line for Liverpool. Iraola was quick to praise his impact on the team's overall energy levels. "He is very clear what he needs to do, what the team needs," the manager said. "Also, the energy he shows is contagious for the rest, when you see the ones up front giving everything you are kind of forced to go, go behind and use the same intensity levels. I'm very happy for him."
Iraola also pointed to a broader tactical rationale behind fielding a youthful side, noting that Liverpool had appeared short of energy in a previous outing. "I think I needed to do it because we could see the other day we lacked a little bit of energy, we needed fresh legs," he said.
Alongside Koumas, several other academy products were given the opportunity to start, including Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha, and James McConnell. All three impressed their manager with performances he described as "very, very energetic."
Nyoni was substituted shortly after the hour mark, though Iraola clarified this was due to fatigue rather than injury, as he was suffering from cramp. McConnell was withdrawn at the same time, with Ngumoha following ten minutes later.
"I was happy for them," Iraola said of the young trio. "In different positions, different demands. But I think the best thing is probably that they were tired when I subbed them; Trey was cramping, Rio couldn't have run a lot more, McConnell the same. When this happens, it's because you've given us what you've got."
He added: "They have especially been very, very energetic, with the willingness of winning the duels, making them feel their presence. I was happy for them."
With Gomez's return handled cautiously and a clutch of young players stepping up impressively, Liverpool will now turn their attention to the last-16 draw as they continue their pursuit of Carabao Cup silverware.
