Lewis Koumas provided one of the standout performances of the night as Liverpool beat Tottenham 3-1 at Anfield in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday, earning the 20-year-old forward his first senior man of the match award.
Koumas, who turns 21 on Saturday, ran himself into the ground against the Spurs backline, constantly creating space and openings for his teammates as Liverpool secured a comfortable passage to the next round. Cody Gakpo handed him the man of the match trophy after full time, a moment Koumas wasted little time sharing with his family.
"That was my mum," Koumas told reporters afterwards, still visibly delighted with the recognition. "She was here tonight with my nan, my grandad and my sister. They were all in the box. I rang them straight away to show them the trophy and they were buzzing."
The performance came just days after head coach Andoni Iraola publicly challenged his more established attacking options to show greater pressing intensity and hunger following a subdued 1-1 draw with Fulham. Koumas was not part of that criticism, but his relentless work rate against Tottenham suggested he had absorbed his manager's message regardless.
Iraola was full of praise for the young forward after the match. "The energy he shows is contagious," the Liverpool boss said. "I'm very happy for him. He does it in training every day. He is very clear what he needs to do, what the team needs."
For his part, Koumas was keen to frame his display within the club's traditional identity. "How I play is ultimately the Liverpool way," he explained. "We've always been a club where players have to give absolutely everything on the pitch. We're bringing that back now and the crowd are loving it. A lot of it is about what I do off the ball. The gaffer has shown trust to me that I can carry out his plans in terms of how we want to play tactically."
The Chester-born forward, whose father Jason played for Tranmere and West Brom, was handed his opportunity in the first-team squad early in the season after Iraola specifically requested Liverpool's then sporting director Richard Hughes keep him at Anfield rather than sending him out on loan again. That decision followed an impressive pre-season tour of the United States, and Koumas has since featured off the bench in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Reflecting on his rapid rise, Koumas admitted he could barely have envisioned this position for himself before the campaign began. "No, I would have woken up," the Wales international said. "I would have thought I was dreaming. I'm just really happy and very grateful for the opportunities I've been given. You never know when your last time on the pitch for Liverpool is going to be. I just try to leave everything out there every time."
Koumas, capped 12 times by Wales and previously given his senior Liverpool debut by Jürgen Klopp, spent the past three seasons out on loan at Stoke, Birmingham and Hull as he waited for his chance at Anfield. He insists that period away only strengthened his resolve. "I never showed a weak mentality about how the future would look for me at Liverpool," he said. "The reason for going out on loan was to prepare for this moment. My hunger comes from representing Liverpool Football Club, wanting to give everything for the best club in the world."
Liverpool will next turn their attention to the Premier League, where they travel to Bournemouth, Iraola's former club, on Sunday.
