A pre-match gesture of solidarity took an awkward turn ahead of Real Madrid's La Liga clash at Elche on Tuesday, after three of the club's players appeared to distance themselves from a tribute intended to support the people of Ceuta, the Spanish autonomous city on Morocco's northern coast.
Before kickoff at the Martinez Valero stadium, players from both Real Madrid and Elche walked out wearing white T-shirts bearing the phrase "Todos somos caballas" — meaning "We are all Ceutans" — alongside other references to the North African enclave. The initiative was designed as a show of unity with Ceuta, which has faced a severe migration crisis in recent months.
While the majority of players on both sides wore the shirts as intended, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konate rolled theirs up to chest height, partially covering the message. Mbappe and Vinicius went further, removing the shirts entirely before the pre-match handshake, while Konate kept his rolled up for a longer period before also discarding the gesture. Their teammates, along with the Elche squad, continued wearing the shirts throughout the pre-match formalities.
The reasoning behind the trio's actions has not been explained, and representatives for the players have been contacted for comment but have not yet responded.
The tribute to Ceuta is not new for Real Madrid. Supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu had already shown their support during the Champions League match against Inter Milan on September 8, when fans in the south stand held up cards displaying Ceuta's coat of arms, prompting the rest of the stadium to join in with applause. That gesture was part of a broader campaign across Spanish football to acknowledge the hardships faced in the city.
Ceuta, separated from mainland Spain by the Strait of Gibraltar, has been at the center of a humanitarian emergency since the summer, when a mass migration crisis unfolded at the border with Morocco. On July 30 and 31, at least 72,000 people crossed into the territory, with many swimming around the border fence. According to figures provided by Ceuta's mayor, at least 100 people died during the crossings. While most of those who entered have since returned, an estimated 5,000 migrants remain in the city, living in makeshift camps or sleeping on streets and beaches. The situation has caused unrest among local residents, some of whom have expressed safety concerns, destroyed shelters, and obstructed the delivery of aid.
Not all clubs have participated equally in the show of solidarity. Barcelona opted out of the T-shirt campaign entirely, while players featuring in other La Liga fixtures wore the shirts without alteration, fully displaying the message of support.
The controversy over the gesture came just before a dramatic match at Elche, where Real Madrid needed a stoppage-time winner to secure victory. Los Blancos had built a two-goal advantage before Elche fought back to level the score, only for substitute Carlos Espi to net a decisive goal deep into added time, securing a 3-2 win for the visitors. Mbappe was among the scorers for Madrid, continuing his strong run of form, while Vinicius started the match after his pre-game T-shirt gesture drew attention.
The incident has added another layer of discussion to an already politically charged campaign, highlighting the differing stances among players and clubs regarding public displays of support for Ceuta amid the ongoing humanitarian situation in the territory.
