Manchester United have been thrown into confusion after 15-year-old wonderkid JJ Gabriel asked for his registration to be cancelled, just a day before he was set to be named in the first-team squad for the Carabao Cup third-round clash with Brighton at Old Trafford.
The timing of the request stunned officials at the club, who had been preparing to hand Gabriel his senior debut, a move that would have made him United's youngest-ever player. Instead, the club now finds itself trying to make sense of a decision that appeared to come out of nowhere.
United insist they are baffled by the development and maintain they have gone to considerable lengths to convince Gabriel and his family that a genuine path to the first team exists at the club. That has included face-to-face meetings involving Ruben Amorim, during his time as head coach, as well as Sir Alex Ferguson, United's legendary former manager.
Despite the request, club sources say the situation is not as simple as Gabriel walking away immediately. He remains under contract until the end of the season and cannot be deregistered on his own terms, meaning United believe there is still room to resolve the matter. The youngster cannot sign a professional deal until he turns 17 next October, though he becomes eligible for a scholarship agreement at 16.
Gabriel has been on United's books since he was 11 and has rapidly established himself as one of the brightest talents to come through Carrington in recent memory. He scored a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut against Sabah last week and netted 26 goals in 29 appearances last season while regularly playing above his age group. He has also earned two caps for England's Under-17s and was the youngest player ever to win United's Jimmy Murphy young player of the year award. His talent has been evident enough that he has trained with the senior squad on multiple occasions.
Adam Lawrence, United's lead Under-21 coach, spoke glowingly of Gabriel after the Sabah rout, emphasizing the club's commitment to nurturing him. "JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through," Lawrence said. "He's been at the club for so long. He's got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well."
Lawrence added that United were being deliberate about managing his development. "At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it's about making sure that he's getting the right exposure across different levels. We're obviously not perfect but it's definitely something we put a lot of thought into."
Interest from elsewhere has followed Gabriel for some time. Both Barcelona and Manchester City have previously been linked with the teenager, with reports last year suggesting his family could be open to a move away from Old Trafford.
The saga emerges at an unsettled moment for United more broadly. The senior side head into the Brighton tie having collected just four points from their opening four Premier League matches, and coming off a controversial 60th-minute defeat to Manchester City in which a VAR error allowed Erling Haaland's winning goal to stand. Interim boss Michael Carrick suggested his players could use that refereeing controversy as extra motivation against Brighton, saying the squad has "got an edge" and has previously shown resilience in bouncing back from setbacks. Defender Luke Shaw could be available for selection after recovering from a knock.
For now, though, attention remains fixed on Gabriel, as United scramble to understand what triggered his sudden request and whether the promising teenager can still be convinced his future lies at Old Trafford.
