Fulham survived a stern test from West Ham to advance to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, winning 3-2 in a match that swung back and forth before Oscar Bobb's 78th-minute strike proved decisive.
Managed by Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham fielded an experimental lineup with nine changes following their weekend draw at Liverpool, and the gamble nearly backfired against a determined West Ham side that twice fought back to level the scoreline in an open first half.
The evening began with a poignant tribute to former West Ham goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko, who died this week at the age of 64, lending extra emotional weight to a contest that West Ham approached with clear intent despite resting several attacking players ahead of their Championship visit to Millwall.
Fulham broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when César Palacios surged down the left flank and found Rodrigo Muniz, who slipped between defenders Konstantinos Mavropanos and Maximilian Kilman to head home the opener. West Ham responded quickly, drawing level when Arne Engels' cross from deep picked out Mavropanos, whose header across goal was turned in by loan signing Morato for his first goal since arriving from Nottingham Forest.
Fulham regained the lead through Palacios himself, who exploited space created by Joachim Andersen's incisive pass from deep to slot past goalkeeper Finlay Herrick. But West Ham's response was swift once more. Benjamin Lecomte parried a flick from Mohamadou Kanté only for the rebound to fall to Pablo, who netted his first goal for the club since his £18.3m move in January, making it 2-2 heading into the interval.
Arbeloa admitted his frustration at the defensive lapses during the break. "I was a bit upset at half-time," he said. "I am asking how we can concede these two goals. So easy for me. We need to improve there. We need to be more aggressive when defending. In the end we need a massive save. If we are not aggressive enough it is my job to improve my players. We have to work a lot."
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo looked to seize control after the break, introducing Jarrod Bowen and Manor Solomon early in the second half. The changes unsettled Fulham, who struggled to build any rhythm as Antonee Robinson forced a save from Herrick at the other end while Solomon and Mavropanos both threatened for the home side.
Arbeloa turned to his bench as well, bringing on Bobb, Josh King and Gonzalo García in search of a winner. The substitutions paid off as West Ham began to tire. King capitalized on hesitation from Kanté in a dangerous area, winning the ball back before setting up Bobb, who cut inside from the right and fired a low finish past Herrick to restore Fulham's lead.
West Ham refused to give up. Bowen fired over the crossbar, and substitute Taty Castellanos saw an effort cleared off the line by Timothy Castagne in the closing stages. Nuno was visibly frustrated by his side missing a clear opportunity to force extra time or penalties, but Fulham held firm to secure passage into the fourth round.
Elsewhere in the competition, Peterborough edged past Barnsley 7-6 on penalties after a 3-3 draw, while Brentford defeated Reading 2-1 thanks to first-half goals from Callum Wilson and Fabio Carvalho.
