Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has insisted he is fully focused on the Ligue 1 campaign after a proposed £47.1m move to Chelsea fell apart in dramatic fashion at the end of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old Senegal international had reportedly gone as far as completing a medical with the Premier League club, only for the deal to unravel in the final hours before the window shut. Chelsea had already seen two earlier bids for Camara turned down before Monaco eventually softened their stance on a sale.
The change of heart from the Ligue 1 side reportedly came amid uncertainty surrounding Folarin Balogun's proposed switch to Everton. With reports suggesting Monaco viewed a major departure as necessary before the window closed, and with indications that the French club preferred to part ways with Balogun rather than Camara, the situation shifted several times in a chaotic conclusion to deadline day.
When Balogun's move to Everton appeared to be progressing again, Monaco reportedly reversed course on sanctioning Camara's exit. In the end, neither player left the club, with both remaining in the principality beyond the deadline.
Speaking ahead of Monaco's league fixture against Strasbourg, Camara addressed the collapsed deal directly, acknowledging the disappointment but stressing his intention to move forward.
"There was a possibility I could leave," Camara said. "It didn't go through at the last minute and that's part of football. I've turned the page and am focusing on the season."
Reports from France had indicated that Monaco felt compelled to generate significant transfer income this summer, and that a substantial fee would have been required to prise Camara away from the club. That valuation appears to have played a part in how negotiations with Chelsea ultimately broke down.
Despite the unsettled nature of his situation in the closing days of the window, Camara has continued to be a key figure for Monaco, who have enjoyed a strong start to the new Ligue 1 season. The club won each of their opening three league fixtures and headed into the weekend sitting second in the table, just behind leaders Rennes, with a game in hand still to play.
The midfielder made clear that his priority now lies with helping Monaco build on that promising start, rather than dwelling on what might have been in the transfer market.
"I can help the team a lot," Camara said. "Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I'm staying focused on the season with Monaco."
His comments suggest a player determined to put the transfer saga behind him and channel his energy into performances on the pitch, even as questions linger over his long-term future at the club. Given the interest already shown by a Premier League side of Chelsea's stature, further speculation regarding Camara's next move seems likely in future transfer windows.
For now, though, Monaco will be encouraged that their prized midfielder remains fully committed to the cause as they look to sustain their strong early-season form and challenge for honours domestically.
