Cole Palmer has credited Xabi Alonso's decisive half-time intervention for sparking a remarkable turnaround as Chelsea fought back from two goals down to defeat Leeds United 6-3 in the Carabao Cup, booking their place in the fourth round.
The England international came off the bench as part of a bold four-man substitution at the break, one that instantly transformed a laboured Chelsea display into a ruthless attacking display at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso had made nine changes from the side that lost to Arsenal at the weekend, and the gamble appeared to backfire in the opening 45 minutes. Leeds, resolute and well-organised, deservedly led at the interval after Tarik Muharemovic headed home from a corner conceded following an error from stand-in goalkeeper Mike Penders. The Belgian shot-stopper had earlier made a pair of important saves but could not prevent the setback. Brenden Aaronson then doubled Leeds' advantage shortly after the restart, compounding a difficult evening for Chelsea's second-string outfit.
What followed was a dramatic shift in momentum. Alonso introduced Reece James, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Palmer all at once during the break, injecting fresh energy and quality into a side that had looked flat. The Manchester-born forward added a second before Neto also got on the scoresheet, putting Chelsea 3-2 ahead having trailed by two just minutes earlier. Danny Welbeck then extended the lead on the hour mark, though Leeds continued to show fight as Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back with a well-taken finish to briefly rekindle hope for the visitors.
Any lingering doubts were erased late on, however, as Valentin Barco netted his maiden goal for the club before Welbeck completed his brace—and his third goal in Chelsea colours—with a header deep into stoppage time, sealing a 6-3 triumph and safe passage into the next round.
