Chelsea produced a stunning turnaround to see off Leeds United 6-3 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, overturning a two-goal deficit to book their place in the fourth-round draw with a scintillating second-half display at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso had made wholesale changes to his starting lineup, resting several key players and handing a senior debut to 16-year-old midfielder Reggie Watson. The teenager, who had shown promise in pre-season outings against opposition including AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur, found the step up to competitive first-team football difficult. He picked up a booking for a challenge on Harry Wilson and struggled to impose himself in a 4-3-3 system that also featured Valentin Barco and Malo Gusto in advanced midfield roles.
The experimental setup offered little resistance to Leeds, who capitalised to move 2-0 ahead. Facing an embarrassing cup exit, Alonso reacted decisively at the interval, making four substitutions in one go. Gusto, Watson, Estevao and Jamie Gittens were all withdrawn, replaced by Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and skipper Reece James.
The changes did not have an immediate effect, with Chelsea initially falling further behind before their newly introduced firepower began to click. Palmer proved central to the recovery, converting a penalty awarded for a foul on Pep Chavarria before doubling his tally with a composed finish following a knock-down from Rogers.
Rogers was influential throughout the second half, setting up three goals in the space of ten minutes and potentially contributing to a fourth. Neto got on the scoresheet after coming on, while Barco capped an energetic display in midfield with a powerful finish from another Rogers-created opportunity. Danny Welbeck also impressed, netting twice to complete the scoring as Chelsea ran riot.
All six of Chelsea's goals arrived after the 52nd minute, as the Blues transformed a difficult evening into a statement of attacking intent. The turnaround eliminated Leeds from the competition and offered plenty for Alonso to be encouraged by, particularly given the identity of the scorers.
Palmer's brace should provide a further confidence boost after a strong start to the campaign, with the England international forming part of an evolving front three alongside Rogers and Joao Pedro. Neto, who has often been deployed in a more defensive wing-back role this season, will have taken particular satisfaction from his goal, having attracted transfer interest in the summer before Chelsea opted to keep hold of him.
Welbeck's double will also have pleased his manager. The forward was brought in as experienced cover for Joao Pedro, with the aim of pushing the Brazilian for a starting spot, and his contribution on the night underlined his value to the squad. Barco, meanwhile, was a constant nuisance for Leeds throughout the second half, and his goal was reward for a tireless, combative performance in midfield.
Despite the shaky start caused by Alonso's rotation gamble, Chelsea's ruthless second-half showing served as a reminder of the attacking quality at his disposal. With progression to the next round secured, the manner of the victory will give confidence to a squad now competing on three fronts this season.
