Chelsea reached the Carabao Cup fourth round in dramatic fashion, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Leeds United 6-3 in a nine-goal spectacle at Stamford Bridge, with Cole Palmer at the heart of a remarkable second-half turnaround.
Xabi Alonso made nine changes from Sunday's defeat to Arsenal, and his heavily rotated side struggled badly in the opening 45 minutes. Leeds, who also made wholesale changes under Daniel Farke, took control and led through Tarik Muharemovic's header from a Harry Wilson corner in the 23rd minute, exploiting a costly Chelsea error at the back.
The visitors doubled their advantage just after the restart when Valentin Barco was dispossessed cheaply, allowing Ethan Ampadu to surge forward and cross for Lukas Nmecha to flick on to Brenden Aaronson, who finished clinically to make it 2-0.
At that point, Alonso's gamble appeared to be backfiring badly. But the Spaniard had already made a bold call at halftime, introducing Palmer, Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers and Reece James in one go — and the substitutions transformed the contest almost instantly.
Chelsea were awarded a penalty when referee Jarred Gillett judged that Daniel James had caught the foot of Pep Chavarria inside the box. Palmer converted calmly to halve the deficit in the 53rd minute, and just two minutes later he struck again, slipping a composed finish from 20 yards past goalkeeper Michael Zetterer after being teed up by Rogers.
With the momentum firmly in Chelsea's favor, Neto put the hosts ahead for the first time just before the hour mark, finishing off another Rogers assist. Danny Welbeck then added a fourth in the 65th minute, cutting inside his marker before drilling a shot beyond Zetterer in what proved one of the standout goals of the night.
Leeds pulled one back through substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who finished off a cross from Noah Okafor, offering brief hope of a fightback. But Chelsea quickly snuffed that out. Barco, at fault for Leeds' second goal, made amends by netting his first goal for the club to restore the two-goal cushion, before Welbeck completed his hat-trick with a stoppage-time header to seal a 6-3 scoreline.
Rogers, who came off the bench, was credited with three assists as Chelsea's second-half substitutes turned the game on its head. Chelsea have now scored 16 goals in Alonso's first five matches in charge, though the manner of the win also exposed defensive frailties, with the club having now conceded 10 goals in all competitions this season.
Speaking afterward, Alonso accepted responsibility for his side's sluggish start. "I take responsibility," he said. "No player is to blame. It's the decisions we took. When you don't have this time to work with them, it's difficult to compete at this level. I need to take my own blame for the things that happen. I need to be able to help them better. They are not responsible. After you need to react and think what's better for the team."
Farke, meanwhile, was left to rue his side's inability to hold on to a strong position, and was critical of the penalty decision that shifted the game's balance. "He gave out of nothing a penalty where it wasn't even a chance for them," Farke said. "A quality player scores and the body language of the Chelsea players was different." He later described the encounter simply as "a crazy nuts game."
The defeat means Leeds have now been eliminated at the third-round stage of this competition for the 14th time in 18 years, while Chelsea advance to the fourth round having survived one of the more chaotic nights of Alonso's young tenure.
