Brentford and Sunderland played out a goalless draw after a lengthy VAR review chalked off what appeared to be a Sunderland opener. In the Women's Super League, Chelsea were held 1-1 by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend of their title defence. Lauren James put the hosts ahead with a clinical solo finish, but Aston Villa goalkeeper Akane Okuma produced a string of saves to keep her side in contention on her debut. Away from the pitch, Liverpool confirmed that sporting director Richard Hughes has stepped down from his role, with the 47-year-old expected to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. Hughes had informed the club of his intention to leave earlier this year following the departure of Michael Edwards as chief executive of football for owners Fenway Sports Group, but agreed to remain in position through the summer transfer window.
