Real Madrid's unbeaten start to the LaLiga campaign came to an abrupt end at the hands of Real Betis, with Troy Parrott's late strike proving decisive in a dramatic encounter that also saw Kylian Mbappe fail from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time.
The Republic of Ireland forward, who had only been introduced as a substitute in the 68th minute, made an immediate impact by finding the net in the 81st minute. Parrott capitalised on a moment of hesitation from Real Madrid, pouncing after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could only parry a header into his path, giving the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Madrid pushed for an equaliser almost immediately, with Mbappe rattling the crossbar just four minutes after falling behind. The visitors briefly thought they had levelled matters when substitute Carlos Espi connected with a Vinicius Junior delivery via an acrobatic bicycle kick, but the effort was chalked off for offside following a VAR check.
Betis had further chances to extend their advantage, with Nelson Deossa spotting Courtois off his line and unleashing a long-range attempt that the Belgian shot-stopper managed to keep out. However, the closing stages produced the most dramatic moment of the contest when Natan fouled Vinicius inside the penalty area during stoppage time, handing Madrid a golden opportunity to rescue a point.
Mbappe stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles guessed correctly and made the save, securing all three points for the home side and inflicting the first defeat of Jose Mourinho's second spell in charge of Real Madrid.
Despite the result, Mourinho praised his squad's performance and character following the match.
