Tottenham Hotspur's frantic summer transfer window produced one final twist on deadline day: a loan move for Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, reuniting him with manager Roberto De Zerbi, the coach who once worked with him at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Spurs entered the market with clear intentions, methodically pursuing targets who fit De Zerbi's vision after last season's narrow escape from relegation. CEO Vinai Venkatesham had described on LinkedIn the extensive planning behind the rebuild, and the club backed that up by breaking its transfer record twice to land Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
But as the deadline approached, Tottenham found themselves short of attacking options having failed to score in their opening two league fixtures. Primary targets Cody Gakpo and Iliman Ndiaye both slipped away, leaving De Zerbi, Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange to search for alternatives in the closing hours of the window. That search led them back to Mudryk, a player with only five goals in 53 Premier League appearances and who has not featured competitively since November 2024 due to a doping suspension.
The move represents a departure from Tottenham's stated summer strategy of pursuing proven Premier League quality, and instead reflects a bet on potential and rehabilitation. Mudryk arrives as raw talent rather than the finished product, someone who possesses considerable physical attributes but still needs to refine the technical and tactical sides of his game.
De Zerbi, who once suggested Mudryk could challenge for the Ballon d'Or during his time managing Brighton in 2022, acknowledged the scale of the task ahead when reflecting on that prediction. "He has had many problems," the Italian said. "In the end, the potential is clear, and now his challenge is to respect all his qualities. He's a great player. He has to feel this season, to live this season in the right way. Not too much pressure, but it's the right moment for him to show all people things."
De Zerbi also pointed to the financial weight Mudryk has carried since his January 2023 move to Chelsea, a deal that could ultimately be worth up to £89 million. "Because if Chelsea paid €100million four years ago, I think they brought in a lot of big players. And to spend 100 million, I think they thought very well about the qualities of Mudryk," he said, adding that the transition from Shakhtar to Chelsea may have come too soon. "From Shakhtar to Chelsea, I think he paid a big price because different leagues, different countries, a different level of the club with a big, big responsibility because he knew the price Chelsea paid for him."
Having been described by Mudryk as a father figure in football, De Zerbi is uniquely positioned to help the 25-year-old settle into his new surroundings. The Ukrainian is known for his quiet, introspective personality despite an evident self-belief, and has at times struggled to fully integrate with team-mates as he relies on individual flair down the flanks.
When given room to operate, as he showed in flashes during Chelsea's Conference League run last season, Mudryk's combination of close control, pace and a powerful right-footed strike can trouble any defense. His work ethic is also notable — De Zerbi has said the winger trains harder than most of his team-mates, reportedly staying behind for extra sessions even after arriving late to media duties following training.
The challenge for Spurs and De Zerbi now is converting that energy and raw ability into consistent end product, at a club that entered the season needing immediate results rather than a long-term reclamation project.
